i deal with the local walmart for ammo rather then the local gun store precisely for this reason. the walmart employees may be only halfway competent and need to be told excactly what and where the ammo is that you want ("alright, i want TWO boxes of the .45 ACP FULL METEL JACKETS, no next shelf over, down, no, left of that, the box that says .45 and has FMJ written on the side, no, no, TWO boxes...) but i think thats better then being treated like an imbecile by a bunch of redneck armchair commandos who think women shouldn't be doing something like playing with manly guns.

and if i can't get it at walmart (and to be honest i can't get a lot of what i want at wally world) i drive a hour to fishersville to go to Dominion, where despite higher prices, they treat me like a queen and sell me what i want, rather then what they think i can handle.
I have heard of gun shops doing that to women and I have yet to understand it.

The other thing I hate hearing at gun shops is all the BS gun myths that have been debunked online a 1000 times like pistol mags taking a set if kept loaded and all that sort of stuff.

The big gun shop closest to me had a pretty good shop and does all the area gun shows, but they were also ones that seriously jacked up their prices a year ago and that soured me on them.  Their gun show prices are also always better than their store prices.  I don't feel any loyalty to them at all.  They also sell ammo at a minimum 50% markup on what I can find online.  I can accept paying a little more, but that is just way too much.

I've seen it in person and dressed down a few people because of it.

I've also seen many a time where employees at a gun counter firmly believe that women are too stupid to handle anything but a .38 spcl snubnose revolver.

Especially ironic as snubbies can be some of the most painful and difficult to shoot well pistols available. Short sight radius, tiny grips, low weight to recoil impulse ratio etc.

Exactly. Snubbies can be excellent CCW weapons, but they are not for the novice shooter.

my dad was in that shop when a young women (about my age) who didn't know anything about guns was looking into getting something for SD. Guess what the guy behind the counter was trying to get her to buy

then he got cranky with my dad becuase he started talking to her and telling her about me. Dad managed to give her my email and number and talk her OUT of buying a snubbie before the guy behind the counter ran him off.

The real annoying part is the owner's wife is a hard core gunnie all on her own and all the boys respect her, but they can't seem to respect the female coustomers. There also real bad coustomer service in general. Its one of those shops where unless your known to the guys behind the counter, they just ignore you. Even dad gets no respect from anyone except the owner himself. You can stand at the counter for about 15 or 20 minuates waiting to see something and they'll ignore you till you interupt their conversation and then they act all huffy with you.
which is why i hate them and LOVE Dominion. The only time you stand waiting at Dominion is if they're obviously packed and even then its only a minute or two before one of the guys is trying to get guns into your hands!

KPT, yes there is plenty of incompetence at Walmart. You knew that. You should have bought your license the day before.

Lesson learned.

I have to agree with that comment.  You put your opening day in the hands of a third shift retail crew (I'm assuming this was in the am)? I'm surprised they even had an employee that was remotely familiar with the Dept.  Truthfully, I don't recall ever getting a hunting license and tags within a ten minute window.

It was not possible for me to get my license the day before. I took the NC hunter safety class from 6-9 Friday and 9-5 Saturday. I got out at around 4:10 PM as I was the first to finish the test. I was at walmart around 4:30 PM.

Yes I should have realized it was a new store and not expected to get out of there quick. Ah well.

I'm still just learning as I've said I've never hunted before. Any experienced hunters in the Raleigh area want to go hunting? I have access to 500+ acres in Durham county and 800+ in Johnson county. Yeah, I partially got the urge to go hunting from having access to the land.

Alienating half your customer base is idiotic.

Especially when the woman you dissed will tell her boyfriend/father/husband/brother, who will also curtail their business with you.

I'd say the average gun shop alienates >50% of its customer base. Popular alienation groups: women, anyone they don't personally know, people who know more than they do, people who know less than they do, rednecks, anyone not a redneck, Fudds, non-Fudds, young people, old people, people who want to buy something, people with valid questions, people who call, etc., etc..

Alienating their customer base seems to be the only thing gunshops are actually any good at.

Several years ago, wife and I went to a shop in Austin. She was ready to drop 2k on a Kimber recommended by an IPSC Grand Master we took training claases with. We mention the IPSC shooters/trainers who referred us to the shop. Owner badmouths the referrer's choice of carry gun, then shoves a distributor catalog at SWMBO. She can't find the model, owner refuses to research it, and pushes a Colt Gold Cup in the case.

We never went back. Local shops aren't always the antidote to Wallyworld
