It's cold when...
« on: January 20, 2008, 02:12:22 PM »
The steel cable lock won't curl back up after you unlock you bike.

I rode my bike to the store this evening to pick up a few things.  I was in there for about 15 minutes, if that, and when I came out, I had to manually curl the cable so I could stick it in my coat pocket.

It's cold when...

Water mains are freezing and bursting.

Your hair freezes on the way to work.

You have to scrape the inside of your windshield.

The creek beside my house had no ice or snow on it last night when I went to bed, and was flowing merrily.  Woke up and it was frozen solid, as far as the eye could see.

That's cold.

I went for a mountain bike ride just before lunch today.  IIRC, the ambient temps were in the high teens.  By the time I finished my ride, less than an hour later, the remaining water in my bottle was slush.

The trails were empty, I love biking this time of year. Smiley

I've experienced both of those.

Currently -1 at the house.  Both dogs are refusing to go outside to do their business.  When I open the front door, a cloud of steam immediately forms and curls in the entryway.

Should be good bicycling weather for Mtnbkr, I wager.

The people at the Mount Washington weather station amuse themselves by throwing a pan of boiling water up in the air. It comes down as ice bits.

I'm also amused on severe windchill days here, can tell who didn't wear enough jacket at work. When people are going out into the parking lot and a sudden icy gust comes up, they're the ones that go "AIIEEE!" and run for their car or the door.  cheesy

The sane side of me would want to stay in with a cup of coffee and a book.  Unfortunately, the reality of a job and family means I have to take my biking opportunities whenever I can.  That means night rides, winter morning rides, etc.  A guy I know organized a ride the other day, starting at 10am.  He thought it was funny when I asked if he could start earlier since 10am was the "middle of the day" to me. It was so cold this morning when I went to the Farmers Market that I had to put on a jacket!  It was in the low 50's!  And I had to wear it all day!  Buttoned up!  It was so cold I was thinking of putting on a hat, but I sucked it up and didn't wear one.

It's cold when your breath makes icy bits build up in your beard.  It's really cold when putting your hand over your face to melt the accumulation of ice, doesn't work.

It's cold when the finishing nails in the paneling inside your house have little balls of ice on them.

It's cold when the foam filled seat in your car is solid and it takes most of your strength to shift your standard transmission into neutral which, you know is not going to help it start. But you have to try because you really don't feel like walking the 1 1/2 miles from the barracks to the hangar to work when it's 32 degrees below zero.

The windows were still frosted over on the inside today.

But at least my feet were warm, thanks to the dog-food-powered foot warmer.   grin

Sliding glass door was frozen shut this morning, required a good tug to open it.
I spent the weekend in Michigan on business.  Bitched about how cold it was the entire time, and caught a head cold to boot.  Shitfire it is colder here at home in NoVA than it was there!

I'm at 3000' in VA so I'm a little more used to the weather than the rest of the area, but crap! It was so cold the dog was inside the basement. Then he knocked his water over. Stepped in it, got my shoelace wet. Took two steps outside and I come back in there is gravel banging along, frozen to my shoelace. I tink it went to about -5 F actual last night with a pleasant breeze(5-25 variable). Truck didn't want to start, etc.

Worst ever was when I looked into the wind up in MN. I blinked and my eyelid stuck shut.

Jamis, wanna do some laps at Conway Robinson?  I'm thinking about hitting it this afternoon around 2pm.

-9 here this morning, but no wind so far so it actually feels warmer than yesterday at +5 or so.

Seems cold, but I'm not as tough as I used to be.  One time in Colorado I put the muffler back on my pickup at -54.  shocked

And here I thought I had it hard putting on a water pump a couple weeks ago when the temps were in the mid-teens. laugh

It's funny, as I get older, and especially the last 2-3 years, I am tolerating cold less easily.

Seek out wisdom in books, rare manuscripts, and cryptic poems if you will, but seek it also in simple stones and fragile herbs and in the cries of wild birds. Listen to the song of the wind and the roar of water if you would discover magic, for it is here that the old secrets are still preserved.
