Dumb people on the internet
« on: January 26, 2008, 06:19:09 PM »
Yeah, I know. They're everywhere. But I seem to get a lot of emails from the dumbest of the bunch from my website.

At least once a week I get an email from my Contact page that says in effect, "I want to buy a gun. How much does it cost?"

Then there's the emails from overseas. Somebody from Elbonia asks if I can sell them a BoomMaster 2000XP.

I started a few weeks back selling items from the site. Crimson Trace laser grips so far have been the most popular.

During the past few weeks, I've had two customers buy laser grips, thinking that the pistol in the photo came with the grips. Yup. They think that for $190 they can get a set of laser grips and a Glock.

It's funny, except for dealing with the returns.

Oh hell, try selling someone a banner... Like, 8' high x 30' wide banner.

And the genius WANTS the thing to put on the side of his warehouse...

And what does he e-mail me?

The "proof" jpeg that the company mailed him when got his business cards made.

"Sir, you're paying a wholesale rate, with the understanding that you are providing a "ready to print" image. This is NOT ready, and if we go ahead, you're going to be even madder than you are now."

"Looks fine on my business cards - those boys printed them just fine."

Sir, the wall of your warehouse is a LOT bigger than a business card, right?"

Sigh...

So, do you have a "dealer support" area yet?

I suggest you take a woot.com approach.

They frequently show things that you don't get pictured with what you do get that day. They include a message to the effect of "No, the XXX does NOT come with the YYY. You're only buying YYY, get your own damned XXX."

But, now you're getting a good idea as to why I hate people so much.

I know how you feel

I'm the Production Manager and Layout Editor for our  university newspaper.  People will send us a scanned image for advertisements that looked like they had scanned their business card, faxed it, and then scanned it again.  Or send us 100x100 pixel images to fit a 4"x3" space that's printed at 300dpi. It'd be freaking hilarious except for all the work I have to do either to make it look good or get them to send me a better image. Not quite as bad as having to get that to fit a 8' x 30' banner, but still. Freaking ridiculous.

That's just how it is when dealing with the public.  I own a lawnservice / snowplowing company.

I'll have people call and ask if we cut grass.  Better yet, people will stop me while I am mowing, ask if I cut grass, then ask for a business card.  Ditto for snowplowing.

In the fall, there's always a few new customers who ask if a fall cleanup is included in the price of a cut.  Sure buddy, your cut takes 15 minutes, but I'll drag a whole crew over here and spend an hour cleaning up your property for free.

You really do see it all when you own a business.

BoomMasters are junk, now, since they went to MIM.  If you can find an older one, though, they're pretty good.  And they have (had) the best gonkulators on the market.

Back in the day, when I posted in the usenet rec.guns newsgroup, under my own name, personal website address and slightly obfuscated email address, I'd get the occasional doozy.

"So, you got a gun at a "garage sale"?  In January?  Riiight.  No, I can't tell you what it's worth."

The Boommaster 2000XP's are over-priced crap.

You can a Remingon 12 ga double barrel Boomstick (American made in Grand Rapids, Michigan) at S-Mart retails for about $109 in the Sporting Goods department.

Oh, and Monkeyleg, I'll take two of the those invisible to x-ray machine $190 Laser Glocks (with padded case, spare batteries, and a recharging kit).

Do you take Elbaloney-Charge Huh? And what's your current exchange rate for Elbos to East German Marks ??

Heh... One scam that's been going on lately is that Rev. Smith calls (or e-mails...) from Nairobi or wherever, and he needs to buy 100 of an item you are selling. He gives you a credit card for the mdse. And you are supposed to ship it via the only carrier that goes to him, and he gives you their phone number. YOu produce and ship the crap, find out his card was bad, and your card that you gave the "shipping service" is now all over Africa...
