OK Folks, I may have broken something...
« on: March 25, 2008, 12:57:53 PM »
APS went screwy when I tried to put it in maintenance mode, then stayed stupid when I tried to reconfigure its settings.

We're running on a modified copy of our old settings file, which means it's possible something decided to break.  If so, please post here to let me know.

Thanks.

Funny.  I came here and that's the first link I clicked on.  It gave me back a DB connection error page.

"Yep, he sure did!" I thought.

Five seconds later and it's fine.

Let me know if it happens again.  I brought the site up on the old configuration info and it was accessing the local database, rather than the new one (the old databases are still running just in case we need them for something).

I'm hoping your problem was when I switched over to the new database.

It's running, but VERY slow. Like it was before the move. And I'm not having trouble with other sites...

Running slowly isn't the word for it.

Right now I'm having page load times of anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds.

Looking good now, from this end.  APS is loading as fast as any other site.

A couple of times today I just got a blank page when going to the main APS URL. I've been seeing sporadic slowness. Sometimes it takes up to about 30 seconds to go to a topic, other times as fast as normal.

Weird.  I'm seeing a slow initial connection (which suggests to me I need to tweak web server settings), but it's fast after that.

It's odd watching the servers run - the database server is almost idle.  Weird.

I'll keep poking around.

OK, I'm seeing the slowness while posting.  I told the SMF software to use persistent connections to the database.  Now I'll see what I can do about speeding up page loads.

OK.  More tweaking = should be faster.

Lemme know what y'all think.

Just so y'all know, the problem was that Apache (the web server) was starting a maximum of 150 servers waiting there to service clients.  If they were all in use, then people got to wait.

I've bumped it to 256; if that starts looking slow then I'll go a bit higher.  It's a balancing process though...

Thanks for sticking with it, Derek.  It seems to be working well at this end right now.
And thanks for posting info on what you are finding.  I may be setting up SMF boards in the future.  Lord knows, I can certainly stand to learn a few things from someone with your level of expertise.
