Texas school district okays teacher concealed carry
« on: August 15, 2008, 08:05:57 AM »
This is perhaps the first school district in the US to okay concealed carry by teachers on campus.
There have been lawsuits in Oregon to allow individual teachers to carry, but none have been successful thus far.

Good news, if the teachers can maintain control of their firearms.  That can be addressed with training.

North Texas school district will let teachers carry guns

HARROLD, Texas A tiny Texas school district may be the first in the nation to allow teachers and staff to pack guns for protection when classes begin later this month, a newspaper reported.

Trustees at the Harrold Independent School District approved a district policy change last October so employees can carry concealed firearms to deter and protect against school shootings, provided the gun-toting teachers follow certain requirements.

In order for teachers and staff to carry a pistol, they must have a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun; must be authorized to carry by the district; must receive training in crisis management and hostile situations and have to use ammunition that is designed to minimize the risk of ricochet in school halls.

At least one school on the planet has finally capitulated to common sense.

w00t!  grin

Hm, but Texas.  What's the fine print?  It seems Texas really, really likes liberal gun laws on their face and then fine-prints them to death.  I guess stringent training requirement do make sense in this situation though, since the idea is more defense of others than defense of self, and that is a different and far more advanced skill set.

Other than the fed regs there is no law in Texas regarding ownership.  The Texas regs have to do with carrying.

Good. Now get rid of the legal prohibition of carry on college and graduate school campuses, so that I can carry at work.

We be moving us and the chirruns to Harrold, Texas!

I do hope that this kind of thinking (Harrold's school board) gets to be contagious...

Does this mean assault weapons will be floating down the school's hallways, borne of rivers of blood?

I do hope so. I could go there and fetch some for myself then!
What bait for assault weapons? I suppose baybees would do, since the sole purpose of assault weapons is to kill baybees?

It's my understanding the CHL holders in texas are specifically banned from carrying on school property, which is defined as inside school buildings.

How is this even possible then? Are they ignoring the law? Are there exemptions that I am unaware of?

The law provides exception when school districts provide written authorization.

Only if somebody trys to see if it true.  Who knows, just because somebody can does not mean somebody will.  I personally hope all the teachers do carry.

They should go a step farther and set up a target area on the school grounds so the teachers can easily keep in practice.

Take a step further and offer firearms safety and shooting during PE.
