broken crankshaft
« on: September 21, 2008, 04:26:22 PM »
No, not a car crankshaft.

This is a crankshaft from a 8,000 metric ton forge press.

The crank broke in the middle, through the throw which has a diameter of 53 inches!

Here's a picture of the press after it was put back together.

This last picture is especially for El Tejon. grin
This is Clarence. He's been known to chew tobacco and eat at the same time. I don't think he bathes to often because he usually smells. I bet he doesn't even cut his lawn!  cheesy

Once congress, in session,
Decreed it's suppression,
But people got around it by writing the last line without any rhyme or meter.

Wow, what a beast.  What do you have it stamping/punching/bending/pressing?

Bet that made some noise when it broke!

Ya got any better pics of the fracture surface, or has it gone to the mat lab already?
I’m not saying I invented the turtleneck. But I was the first person to realize its potential as a tactical garment. The tactical turtleneck! The… tactleneck!

We forge crankshafts, ring gears, steering knuckles, and some other small car and truck parts. Oh, and some airplane crankshafts too.

Actually there wasn't one loud noise when it broke. We had problems with bearings over heating but that's not uncommon during the summer when this happened. Then it got to the point where we couldn't get 5 parts through the press without having a bearing overtemp at which point they knew we had a serious problem.

Sorry, I don't have any better pics. As far as I know the crank is still sitting in the same spot though.

mat lab

We have a forklift that met lab uses. It says MET LAB across the back of it and some one took a marker and added a H to the end of MET.  cheesy

Naw, crazy glue and duct tape will work just fine. I used to do A/C work at an old stamp press factory. They had a ton (or two) of those sitting idle in a corner. They had upgraded to newer machines but kept the old ones. I was always amazed by them. The place made small two burner stamped metal gas stoves that were made here in CT and sold in Israel.
Avoid cliches like the plague!

Almost looks like the remnants of a casting void there on the lower right quadrant.
