Ok I need some help from other Geeks (WoW experience a plus)
« on: October 02, 2008, 02:23:27 PM »
Alright I am trying to figure out a solution to this but I am stuck.
I am a gamer as well as a Geek and my main poision is World of Warcaft.  I play on 4 different OS installations on 2 computers.  And each OS installation has 2 isntances of WOW.  SO in the end I have 8 instances of WoW installed.  (Don't worry I only have 2 accounts)

Anyway, the issue is this, keeping 8 instances of the game is a Pain in the rear.  I have to worry about updates UI addons, etc that are always changing.  I am looking for a way to have he game folder synced from a main install.  It doenst' have to be the entire game.  I am mainly worried about the /etc and /addon folders.

Are there any options out there to do this or does anyone have any ideas.

LOL   3rd account was created when the new Recruit a friend program came out.  So yeah.  Transferring the toons off of it in a couple weeks.  Will still have two accounts and need to be able to sync between the installs.

If you can stick to Ace mods, they have a nifty updater that makes things really simple even if you had to do it several times per patch.

I've been playing the game off and on about a year now.  I probably play a couple of hours 4 nights out of the week with friends.

I really don't see why everyone gets so addicted to it.  It's pretty mediocre compared to all the other MMOs I've played.  And of course, compared to some of the single player games I've played, it's pretty terrible.  But my friends and I have fun leveling so...

I honestly don't feel that I'm missing anything by not playing video games anymore. Wink

I can't say I do that, but I try to limit myself to games that you can play and finish in less than an hour.  I have one game I like to play that takes longer, but I never play it because I rarely want to waste that much time screwing around with it.

LOL  to each their own.  I am 30 years old and I still love Video Games.  WoW is a good Casual MMO.  Much better than the Hours I would have to spend in Everquest just trying to get ready to do something.

Some games are fun.

I just have a short attention span and won't play any that take more than half an hour at a time.

Bleeding Hollow here....

Used to have a toon on Eldre'Thalas... moved it to bleeding hollow when they started allowing PVE to PVP transfers.

Kara last night for the first time. Here's me. Picked up Garona's Signet Ring, Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle, and my T4 gloves on the first run

:-)

As for your problem... share a folder somewhere on your network. copy one of the "instances" WTF and Interface folders to that drive on the network. On each client installation, make an alias for the WTF and Interface folders, pointing to the network drive. That will take care of preferences and addons

As for the patches and updates, use wowwiki.com's list of patch mirrors to download the patches manually. Then at least you don't have to run the downloader from blizzard on each one, wasting bandwidth.

You only need one installation of WoW per OS you can run it multiple times from the same install. I've done it before.

Any particular reason you need multiple installations of the same game?

Seems to me the easiest way to stay synched up is to delete the extraneous 7 instances of the game.

You could always write a batch file that maps drives and copies the relevant folders.   Or is that too old school?

I play on Kargath, but only one account.    Here's my main:

Every once in a while I run across someone who gets the joke about a shadow priest named Mather.
