Beer/Ale drinkers - Belgian type n particular
« on: December 05, 2008, 03:03:21 PM »
If you have a Trader Joe's close by...you need to check this out.  $5 for 750ml bottle (9%).  VERY decent ale

A $5.00 bottle of beer?  It had better be good for that price!  :O

I have a Trader Joes nearby, I may try it.

Gewehr, I wouldn't treat this like beer, but more like wine in the way it's consumed and appreciated.

Darn people posting their threads about fine brews.  They make me thirsty.   =)
And me, still trying to shake this cold or whatever it is I've had since before Thanksgiving.  I can't taste a good beer right now.
That stuff looks intriguing, Lee.

A $5.00 bottle of barleywine, as it were.  ;)

I'll just get a 6 pack for Blue Moon, add an orange and I'm good to go.

Something like that.  Speaking of barleywines, that's one of my favorite style of beer.  There's a brewery and restaurant nearby that makes a great one, but they haven't had any on tap for the past couple years.  It's still listed as one they make, but I never seem to be there when it's being served.

Thanks to living in a Yankee college town, I get that one on tap here (which used to be my old office):

Excellent taste, Lee.  I am impressed.

Them Suthrin' boys is always braggin' up Shiner Bock.  I've been curious about it for several years now.  We couldn't get that beer around W. Michigan....at least not till now.

My grandson cooks at a popular tavern in a close by town.  He called.  They got Shiner Bock on tap just recently.  Today I had some.   =(   That stuff tastes like flat dishwater.  Actually, it doesn't have mush taste at all.  I hate to say it, but some folks don't ask much in the way of taste for some beer.

I'll stick with my Miller High Life, Labatts, Red Stripe, and some other malty lagers.

I spent a year and a half living in Austin starting in 2002 (cool town!).  I finally had an opportunity to try Shiner after reading constantly on THR about how good it was.
It was okay, nothing to write home about.  We can get it here in Oregon now and again.  About the only time I drink it is when Buster's Texas BBQ has it in stock, just to keep with the theme.

Ah, geez, gramps, why did you have to bring up that swill?

I always had Fat Tire when I was at TR-Tejas.  A much better selection.  Still drink it as Fat Tire is now sold in Chicago.

The best beer that has ever been made is no longer in production, having been sacrificed in order to allow the dull mass-produced lagers to dominate the market in the UK.  I was born within sight of its hallowed brewery, now demolished and turned into that urban wasteland known as the shopping mall.

Just before its demise they were offering tours of the premises for a mere five pounds.  Two hours inspecting machinery, and an hour all you can drink "tasting" session.  Happy days indeed!

Blue Moon = Coors. I did not like it.

It tasted like it was trying to be a Chimay, but it was not.

If I want a spendy beer...Stone Brewery. Wooooo good.

Beer... ::sigh::

As a proud Texan, I can proudly say that Shiner Bock sucks. Some Shiner's other brews are pretty good, but the Bock sucks.

For barleywine fans: Try Old Foghorn Barleywine by the Anchor Brewing Company out of San Francisco. My favorite Barleywine, and I am a fan. Actually, all of Anchor's beers are fabulous, especially the Anchor Steam beer.

Maned:

Stone IPA is only surpassed by Arrogant Bastard Ale in my book.

For your information, sir. Stone now makes the Arrogant Bastard Ale in an "oaked" variety. I tried it for the first time on Tuesday. Suffice it to say, Tuesday will forever live in infamy.

Arrogant Bastard Ale is the beer equivalent of an IMAX movie. =)

And I...will have to try that. Oaked.

Damn you!

If you like barley wine, try Old Guardian, by Stone Brewing Company.

I picked up some Lost Abbey Gift of the Magi and Ommegang Three Philosophers yesterday.  Tonight is going to be fun.

If you like Arrogant (you're not worthy) Bastard, you really must try the seasonal Double Bastard.  Note, when you do, that the label includes the year brewed so you may lay some down to age.  The oldest I have had has been a four year, wine cellared, bottle.  Very yummy stuff!
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

Yeah I need to get a few of those Double Bastards.  I have Stone's 2006 and 2007 Vertical Epic brew stored away for the future.

I was in heaven the 2 years I was stationed in Bavaria Germany. Now my favorites are Tecate, Yuingling and killians. Nothing of Belgium decent to offer on this end, sorry.  Also no Trader Joes in the area.

One word of warning.  A bottle of this causes an increase in internet postings ha ha.
Compared to the Chimay at $10-12 a bottle, this is a bargain.  It's not much different than buying a cheap bottle of wine...although I rarely drink an entire bottle of wine in one night.

...Now my favorites are Tecate, Yuingling and killians.

Long ago I was gently accosted by an Irishman in a supermarket.  I was reaching for some Tooth's Sheaf Stout at the back of a shelf but appeared to be going for some Killian's.  In a lovely brogue I was told that the Coors/Unibev Killian's and the real Killian's were like the VW Beetle (air cooled only in that day) and the 911 Porsche:  there are a great many similarities but absolutely no question which is the better of the two.  I've never had Irish brewed Killian's but given the enormous gulf between Aussie brewed Castlemain's XXXX and the atrocity committed under that name by Unibev, I suspect I'll like the real Killian's.
