I'm sure most of you have heard or read about the Marine fighter that crashed near Miramar. I just about went postal when I saw this tidbit in one of the articles:

The crash was near University City High School, where students were kept locked in classrooms after the crash. Barbara Prince, a school secretary, said there was no damage to the campus and no one was injured.

Why would a school go into lockdown because a plane crashed? It seems that "lockdown" has become a virtual security mantra for school administrators since Columbine. Doesn't matter what the problem is, lockdown is the answer.

God save us. The inmates are truly running the asylum.

Just an extension of "zero tolerance".  School administrators are no longer accustomed to making decisions for themselves.

Wait, wait... A plane falls from the sky, causing a good explosion and a not unimpressive fire.  This plane may just be carrying enough explosive ordnance to level the school.  And this all happens a mile away...

And you guys have a problem with the school locking everybody inside.  This isn't school shooting hysteria.  It's a plane crash.

Even if the plane carried enough ordnance to level 10 schools, it happened a mile away.

Just how far do you think the blast radius extends?
