Er.. what?
« on: December 11, 2008, 10:41:15 PM »

The shell from a hunter's rifle lies near the one of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton's four lakes,
most likley hunting duck or small game, Nov. 23.

Err what? Doesn't everyone up your way hunt ducks with full auto blanks? Scares 'em right out of the sky in these parts.

Dang it.  Got scooped.

Yeah, interesting.  I'll kick things off.

1.  Those are probably blanks.

2.  You don't use blanks for hunting.

3.  But if you can hit a duck with a rifle, you're probably so AAWESOME, you could kill it with a blank round, anyway.

4.  "Ducks or small game"?  I thought ducks were small game.  ???

Well I suppose you could hit them with a rifle if they were on the water. I'm not going to go into the foolishness of firing a high velocity rifle round like 5.56mm at water though.

Ducks are considered waterfowl. Pheasants and quail are upland but sometimes lumped with small game. Small game is usually squirrels and rabbits. Raccoons, foxes, coyotes, wolves, mink, etc are considered fur bearers. Large game is the bigger stuff like deer, pigs, bear, moose, etc.

I've been checking, and it's actually closer to 95%.

Seek out wisdom in books, rare manuscripts, and cryptic poems if you will, but seek it also in simple stones and fragile herbs and in the cries of wild birds. Listen to the song of the wind and the roar of water if you would discover magic, for it is here that the old secrets are still preserved.

One of my uncle's was a fighter pilot in WWII. Flew P-38's in the Pacific. I provide that background because he says that's how he acquired the skill to do this:

My father and him were not only brothers but great friends. They hunted together a lot. Mostly birds; mostly Dove. When I got old enough I went with them.

To my amazement my uncle went bird hunting with a 22 - a bolt action tube fed model. He had no trouble bagging his limit of dove and yes he shot them on the wing  :O. I remember him always ribbing my dad about how it was just too easy with a shotgun so to add a bit of challenge he used the rifle and why didn't my dad use one too. My dad always claimed that as a bombardier he'd learned the shotgun approach worked just fine and it worked just as well on birds.

WTF they do?

Take them out of the magazine and throw them?

That music in the frogman video.  I've heard it in a movie.  Which one?  Sounds quite nice, although I don't know the lyrics.

The opening tune is Baby Elephant Walk by Henry Mancini, written for and first used in John Wayne's Hatari! in 1962. Here's the clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN2xQ2zqmCI

Lyrics were written for it by someone else when Mancini wrote the tune but were not used for the film. Lots of covers were recorded in the '60s, one or more of them might've used the lyrics.

For the record, I recognized the tune and remembered the name of it almost correctly, and remembered what film it was used in. The details I had to look up.

And the other song is "Chaiyya Chaiyya" by Sukhwinder Singh, used in many movies but most notably in Dil Se and Inside Man.
