2swap forgets the really hilarious part. When she first visited me, about a year and a half ago, her mother kept bugging her over the phone about 'what she was doing', sometimes two, three times a day. Eventually we decided to be truthful.

And my brain wasn't clouded. It was an awesome idea and I stand by it to this day.

It was an awesome idea, sure. But without bliss-induced impairment of consequence processing I would have been rather scared of the affair.

(Yeah, forgot about my Mum's bugging since she always does that)

I believe we are allowed to debate every single bit of this - the definition of what shape this discipline and order should take, how it should be imposed and whether at all.

As do I.

There have been societies with relatively little control imposed from gov't. Early USA is a good example. But, they were remarkably self-disciplined and needed little gov't attention to maintain order.

Later on, the Darwinian nature of the frontier weeded out the undisciplined the old fashioned way, by killing them.

Is it a coincidence that the closing of the frontier in the 1890s was followed by an expansion of gov't to the point where we (as American) could credibly claim to have had the first fascist head of gov't, Woodrow Wilson, and alcohol prohibition?

We are social critters, not Randroid atomistic curmudgeons.

there was a well used dueling ground in bladenburg md just outside the dc line. i used to have a great book on american duels there was a story about abe lincoln getting challenged in it

Oh yeah, duels existed. I do doubt the existence of frequent "Gunsmoke"-type stuff. Mostly because the historians I've read do, my knowledge of it is flawed and I need to read more.

Right now though I have a biography of G. Washington and one of Lee together, and a book about the Pope's Elephant.

Violence may have been over-stated due to the nature of fiction focusing on it. But the frontier had a lot of ways to eliminate stupid people.
