Anyone have experience with ProMag magazines?
« on: February 03, 2009, 02:43:02 PM »
I'm in a bit of a bad spot with my Walther P99.  I love the gun, and shoot it well.  I don't really want to part with it, but the mag situztion may be the end of me and the gun.  Mine was bought during the AWB, so I have a pair of 10 round mags that came with the gun.  None of the major sites has full-cap factory (Smith or Walther) P99 mags listed as available.  In fact, Midway says that they have been discontniued by the manufacturer.  Smith offers only the 10 round mag for the P990L.  I sent them an e-mail, and they said that the mags are only available in 10 round capacities.  I know MecGar makes the mags, but they don't offer them for sale directly.    The only source of full cap mags I can find is Promag.  From reading around here, they have a spotty reputation.  Mags run $31 for a full cap, but to be honest I'd rather not buy a bunch of mags at $31 a piece if they won't work, and save the money for 10 round mags that will work.

Can anyone help me, or am I doomed to sell off my P99?
No, I'm not mtnbkr.  ;)

I have never seen a ProMag anywhere that wasn't a POS that jammed continually.

They even made an AK mag that jams, something people hammering them out of scrap in caves could not do.

My opinion is that if they were free, they'd cost too much. It also should say something that they're the only ones available...it's because people flee from them!

I had three that were junk, and one that actually works.

I should've learned after the first bad one, but I took a gamble, and lost.

One was for my 9mm 1918 DWM Luger.  Junk.

One was for my 9mm Kahr K9.  Junk.

The last one was a 20-round mag for my M14NM.  Again, junk.

Fool me once...

The .357 Desert Eagle mag works fine, though.  Go figure.

I found that the only way to cause a Smith & Wesson 4506 to malfunction was to insert a ProMag magazine.

Use 'em on the range and you'll be OK. I can't recommend them for competition or defense, though.

They're good for malfunction drills.

Tam says that, since a magazine is a device for feeding ammunition, these ain't.

Bought two ProMag mags for my CZ-75B in 40S&W.

Might as well have thrown the money in the trash and lit it with a match for all the use I got out of them.

Lips were defective and both were a bit short. Never worked right, had to jam 'em up tight into the magwell just to get the 1st round to feed and then they would fail to feed about every 3rd round or so after that.

Garbage, trash. Not fit for use.

9mm, 15 rounds.

That's very interesting.  Typically, i search for the S&W P99/P990 mags because they are cheaper.  That's where I got the "discontinued" message.  Thanks for the other tips.  Guess it's time to do some chopping.

As an aside, I saw a full cap Walther P99 mag at a central Ohio gun dealer listed at $84.  You can see why I'm shopping on-line for something a bit less expensive.  i wish MecGar would sell these directly, like they do the Beretta 92F.

Anyone have experience with ProMag magazines?

A little bit.  One Promag out of 5 or 6 for my old Mini-14 was bad, the rest performed well.  The only aftermarket mags I found that would reliably hold the bolt open after the last round.

The one pistol mag I had, for a CZ-100, was crap, so much so that I didn't try to foist it off when I traded off the gun.  It's sitting in my basement somewhere rusting or getting pissed on by the cat.

My only ProMag experience was the 15rd 9mm Hi-Point carbine mag that never once fed a round after the first shot.  I sent it back.

During the dark days of the AWB I purchased 4 ProMags for my 9mm BHP. They seemed to work OK, so I took them to a pistol class.

Two days and something over 1000 rounds later - using the ProMags exclusively - my total malfunctions of any type were . . . exactly zero.

Not bad for cheap cr@p, eh?

Heh... want REAL fun? Try finding mags for the old TDE Automag. Last time I found anyone who said they had 'em (at a gun show, but the mags were at home), they wanted $150 per.

I REALLY want to play with the 'Mag in competition. But that price is just a tad steep for this boy...

I have a couple for my sig 226 and have had no problems, I just bought 3 for my sig 220. Those one hold the slide back on the last shot. I called them and they we going to send a mailer to return them for repair or replacement so we will see. In my professional opinion the only problem with them is the spring being to light.

I bought some standard capacity ProMags for my Glock 17 years ago.  Poor design did not extend the metal shroud all the way up the magazine, so as the cartridges would feed, each one would wear a little bit off the retaining lip of the magazine until I would get double feeds and stovepiles.

No more ProMags for me.

I have only had one ProMag.
I should have sent it back but I like to play with everything.

After taking it apart, hitting with a hammer and welding a little on it.
Hey instead of feeding nothing it feeds all but the last round.

Well, just don't load the last round, and you should be fine.   =D

I have tried a few different types of Pro-mag mags.  None were very reliable.  They worked well enough for range use, but I wouldn't trust them.  They tended to have thinner or cheaper mag bodies and the springs were as good.  They feel cheaper and are.

If you just got to have another mag to plinking use, it will work for that, but nothing more serious.

I tried them some years ago in a Browning Hi Power and a 1911.

I won't be trying them again.
