Your state's Brady rating
« on: February 05, 2009, 06:32:57 PM »
Cursory seach didn't find anything! Mods can move or merge, of course.

Just heard on the news, my state(WV) is still only #44 on the Brady sh##list. Out of a hundred points we only got 2 for some BS and 2 for some cowcrap. Danged, breaks my heart!

Stay safe, and armed.

If Texas gets a parking lot bill this term, we might slip lower  Here's hoping.

Oklahoma is tied for first (actually last in the Brady way of thinking) with only 2 points.

I heard California was last (first) with 79 points.

In my mind it is like golf and the lower the score the better right.

Not much lower to go.  Open Carry and the parking lot bill would get us in the negatives.

IIRC, Oregon (the state I live in while I got to college) got a D or a C- from the Brady Bunch, and Nevada (the state in which I have my official residency) was ranked about the same.  Can't remember what their exact rankings were, but somewhere in the 30s or 40s.

Hey! How did Texas fail worse than my state? We have open carry here and no qualification for CCW!

We need to fail better! Stupid Bradyites! We want to horrify them!

I figured Arizona would be lower with open carry, gunshows every weekend and to legally CCW a bazooka if you could conceal it :)

Texas needs to get rid of CAP as well as pass a parking lot bill.
The Bradys are wrong, it is legal to sell guns to someone under 21, but due to federal law, you cant get one from an FFL.  If we had guns on campus, we'd probably be the lowest state.

I wonder if we could sell that to Rick Perry...

I wonder how New Mexico got 6? We have open carry, shall-issue concealed, no state-level gun control, full auto is legal, vehicles are considered "homes" (legally, that is, though many take it literally), so guns in cars are no problem, plus we have preemption that's actually respected and enforced. How else could we do "worse"?

Edit: all I had to do was look. We "pass" on "Gun Manufacturer Accountability": "State law allows cities and local governments to take legal action to hold gun manufacturers accountable if they act irresponsibly in the way they design, market or distribute weapons. Gun manufacturers can be held legally accountable, just like the makers of every other product."  ;/

Also interesting: look at the "high profile shootings map". Most of those shootings took place in the northeast and west coast. Might be illuminating to correlate the locations of all those shootings with the score of their respective states; get an average score for a "high profile shooting state" vs. a "no high profile shootings state", or plot "number of high profile shootings vs. score".

If/when Wisconsin gets CCW, that should put us in the bottom 10.

Hmm...Oregon and Nevada are much higher than I thought they were.  Not good.  Then again, the Brady Bunch seem to have a real asinine way of grading things, and they don't seem to completely understand the laws they're trying to grade.

Our 4 points were 2 for no on-campus carry and 2 for no workplace carry. I don't thinkl there's specific bans, just not  a gaurantee under the law.

Also, Nevada rates #1 w/ Brady but has the worst crime rate according to what I've read elsewhere.

That's California.  Nevada is ranked #23, and the crime rate isn't that high.

You know, I'm pretty happy with our score/situation here. We have pretty relaxed gun laws being such a low population/rural state, but our score is just good enough for us to be pretty much left alone by the anti-gun crowds.

They have us ranked wrong last I checked.

Don't talk that way - they want to control the terms, as in "strong" vs. "weak" gun laws. I say we here in NM have strong gun laws, in that they strongly protect the RKBA.

It's good to be an OKIE! =D.
There are several bills in our legislature this year that if passed (unlikely though) should give us a negative brady rating.

Carry on college campus is on the agenda for this current session of the legislature.  I figure it has a better chance of passing than the Open Carry proposal.  I think Open Carry will take a couple tries before it passes.

I am upset that Texas is only -27.  I guess I need to jump on the TSRA to try harder.
