Does anyone have any preferences for tax software? We've got to prep taxes for three people, a sole-owner LLC and a corporation...

I used Turbo Tax for many years, until the debacle a few years ago with their copy protection/spyware installation scheme.  I switched over to Tax Cut, and am happy with that.  I think you cannot go wrong with either.

I've used Tax Cut for many years now, and never had a problem with them.

Mtnbkr turned me on to Tax Act. I don't do mine online, though, I download the program to my desktop.

I've been using the downloaded version of TaxAct for the last 4-5 years.  Works well for me.

Yeah, its called Whatever My Small Business CPA uses.   Actually we use quickbooks, I burn the company copy to disc and give the disc to my CPA.

I found turbo tax to be too cumbersome as a Sole Proprietorship.....it wasn't that intuitive on the types of things we could write off in our business.

TaxCut is pimped by HR Block.  Get in over your head and you can get help.  Software does a pretty good job in simplifying tax stuff.  You can still get into trouble and most importantly not know it.

Can I import last year's data in a Turbotax file into either Taxact or Taxcut? Is it naive to think they use standard file formats? I'm tired of TT.

Dunno about that, but the online version of TaxAct stores your info so all you have to do is update numbers the next year.

Was going through the local Dollar Tree store the other day (Need Valentine's cards and candy for the kiddo's to take to school and some other small stuff) and right by the register was a display with H&R Block Taxcut CD's. (CD cover says "Includes One Federal e-File.")

So I asked the register lady, "Is this really the tax prep software ??"

"I think so."

"and it's only a buck"

"Yep"

What the hell, for a dollar...."

Haven't loaded it up yet, but it looks like the real deal.

That sounds really odd.  Are you sure it was for the 2008 tax year, scout26?
If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.

Wow, I paid $ 15 for my copy of Tax Cut at Wally World.  Quite a deal you got if it is for the current tax year.

The trick is the '1 federal return'.  They'll try to make up the difference in charging more for the state, any extras.
