WalMart Interview
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:57:59 PM »
A manager at Wal-Mart had the task of hiring someone to fill a job
opening. After sorting through a stack of resumes he found four people who
were equally qualified. He decided to call the four in and ask them only
one question. Their answers would determine which of them would get the job.

The day came and as the four sat around the conference room table, the
interviewer asked, 'What is the fastest thing you know of?' The first man
replied, 'A THOUGHT.' It just pops into your head. There's no warning.
'That's very good!' replied the interviewer.

'And, now you sir?', he asked the second man. 'Hmmm...let me see 'A  blink!
It comes and goes and you don't know that it ever happened.  A BLINK is the
fastest thing I know  of. ' 'Excellent!' said the interviewer. 'The blink of
an eye, that's a very popular cliche for speed.'

He then turned to the third  man, who was contemplating his reply.  'Well,
out at my dad's ranch, you step out of the house and on the wall there's a
light switch. When you flip that switch, way out across the pasture the
light on the barn comes on in less than an instant. 'Yep, TURNING ON A LIGHT
is the fastest thing I can think of'. The interviewer was very impressed
with the third answer and thought he had found his man. 'It's  hard to beat
the speed of light,' he said.

Turning to Bubba, the fourth and final man, the interviewer posed the same
question. Old Bubba replied, 'After hearing the previous three answers, it's
obvious to me that the fastest thing known is DIARRHEA.' 'WHAT!?' said the
interviewer, stunned by the response. 'Oh sure', said Bubba. 'You see, the
other day I wasn't feeling so good, and I ran for the bathroom, but before I
could THINK, BLINK, or TURN ON THE LIGHT, I had already crapped my drawers.'
Bubba is now the new greeter at a Wal-Mart near you. You probably will think
of this every time you enter a Wal-Mart from now on!
"Bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round...

Having actually worked for Wal-Mart for a few years, I found it to be far better then most people tend to make it out to be.  Pay was decent for the skill level, 10% discount card was standard issue, and payed time / breaks were very closely tracked.

That said, I wasn't trying to support a family then either...

Nick: that discount card, did it apply to food items as well? I assume tobacco is excluded, but if you work at a Super Walmart 10% off groceries could be a huge bonus.

Heh... I was just going to say that dad's a greeter.

Want to see my dad in action? watch Jeff Dunham's Walter segments. Seriously... after we first saw that, we were joking that dad should get a job as a greeter (which he then went and did)...

Hoping Nick doesn't mind my stepping in...

The employee discount applies to everything in the store except certain prepared/prepackaged food items (I found that out when I bought a sandwich from the deli for lunch) and reduced-price items. That includes tobacco products IIRC. I never bought any such when I worked there, the prices were too high even with the discount, so I can't say for certain.

An obvious fantasy.

What do you mean? Walmart jobs are generally hotly competed over in many communities.

Mostly by people who have never heard of a "résumé," let alone know how to spell it or write one.

I've actually submitted my resume to two separate local WalMarts over the last couple of weeks.

So yeah, that statement is indeed an unfair generalization.  =|

I walked into a local walmart yesterday to get a 6-pack of dew and see if they had any 9mm WWB in stock (they didn't) and was shocked to see the line in their "check cashing" section... kind of depressing, tossing away a good percentage of your check, don't people know about banks?  (I get 4.5% interest on my free checking account, provided I use the debit card 2 times a week.. which usually happens the first day of the week.)

I hate the greeters that don't even say HI.. they've got one fairly simple job and they can't accomplish it?  I say cut them and save me another 2 cents on my dew!!!!

As far as the jobs go... my cousin started off as a checker at Target, after 25 years of progressing he is a district manager for another large retail store and makes more money in one year than I do in five.  I wouldn't knock people getting into that career if they've got advancement on their mind or are using it as supplemental income.

I'll go jd one further and say...

If you're so petty that you have to put other people down because of how they make their living you should take a long look at yourself in the mirror just to see if you can stand it. There are dimwits in every occupation. If they show themselves to be so, by all means call 'em on it. Don't assume that they are just because of what they do for a living.

Honest work is honest work regardless of any other factors. Don't knock anybody who's working for a living, and don't knock 'em for how they make their living.

I'll put it this way: anyone who wants to give my dad grief because he's a people greeter at Wal Mart can feel free. I WILL say though, prepare to feel REALLY stupid afterwards...

Check cashing at Wal-Mart is a flat $3 fee. Sometimes banks are closed when people need money.

I just started working at my local Wal-Mart for $7 an hour.  It's depressing, but hopefully I'll be able to find something else soon.
Then again, the job is temporary...they'll probably just lay me off after a few weeks, but we'll see.  Maybe they'll like me enough to keep me.  Going home sick on the second day wont help me, but hey, at least I was REALLY sick.

Yup, it covers pretty much everything except clearance.  Don't know about alcohol/tobacco - I wasn't interested in buying either.

At Christmas, if the store has done well, they will give you a coupon good for an additional 10% off any one item in the store - so 20% off total.  I ordered in a rather nice 11-87 and got it for 20% off Walmarts already low, low prices.  =)

I was in shipping/receiving for general merchandise.  Between one and two 53' semi trailers a day was the norm.  Hard work, but gave me a good appreciation of the value of a dollar.

My son and his wife both work at a wal-mart distribution center. $15-17 an hour for what is basically unskilled labor. They train you to use all the material handling equipment. If I got laid off(a very real possibility in this economy)from my modest $75K a year job I would not hesitate to put in an application there.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.
