Why am I surprised.....
« on: March 28, 2009, 09:26:46 AM »
by the stupidity of the average CNN viewer?? This morning, I was watching CNN to see some pictures of the Red River in Fargo, ND. Pretty amazing how powerful nature is. Even more amazing is how strong the people living in the Plains states can be.

The reporter was attempting to explain why cities north of Fargo would face flooding AFTER Fargo. Apparently this required the reporter to spend several minutes explaining that the Red River flows FROM SOUTH TO NORTH!!  Amazing. This reporter actually explained that the land south of this scene was higher and as one went north it became lower, thus, the river would actually flow northward.

Are American TV viewers so brain dead as to think rivers can only flow southward ie. "downhill?"

Unfortunately, yes.

There is more than one Red River, you know. When I hear "Red River" I think of the one along the Texas-Oklahoma border which does flow south. So, maybe the reporter was just trying to head-off questions about whether the flooding will reach Texas.

But, generally speaking, people are idiots outside their own personal sphere.

So true....but I think you are giving them too much credit!!!

I just realized, however, as I criticize the viewers of CNN, I also confess to being one. That actually is truly for professional reasons. I also read the Washington post and the New York Times. A dirty job but needed!

Dude, you've been a cop for almost a quarter of a century, and you're seriously asking that question?

You KNOW the answer! :D

I don't find this stupid at all. If all the rivers in this nation generally flow from the north to the south, then it is the rare exceptions that need to be explained.

BTW, my "China Business" lecturer mentioned that most chinese assume all rivers flow from west to east. Because all of their majors flow from west to east. Such major geographic features shape the useful assumptions of the mind.
