Quick help with Firefox browsing history needed

I am trying to delete my history of visited websites and can't.  I've tried the Tools> Options> route and I have set my preferences so that it is supposed to automatically delete my history when I close FF.

Every time I click the right corner of the box that shows the current web address, I get a drop down box that lists 12 websites.  At least 2 of which I haven't been to in months.  I'm not a computer guy, but I do know the usual routes to take care of this and have had no luck. 

Any other ideas?

Which version of Firefox?  The newer ones show your bookmarks in that dropdown.

Try "ctrl-shift-del" to invoke the "Clear Private Data" function in the newer versions of Firefox.

Then check off what you want 86'd.

When needed I generally "history > show all > shift click > delete."

I had one problem some time ago of a "History" not clearing when I closed down.  Upon futher checking, the dmn website had posted itself on my "Favorites". 
Cleared it from Favorites, problem solved.

Thanks everybody.  The sites that kept showing up after I cleared my history were all saved in my favorites.  That explains it.
