How do CO2 scrubbers work?
« on: July 08, 2009, 04:51:48 PM »
I can't find any info online because I get drowned in global warming BS. I just want to know how the common CO2 scrubbers used for underwater rebreathers, enclosed spaces, and spaceship atmospheres work.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

It uses a granular CO2 absorbing material. Trade names are soda sorb, sofnolime, and a few others. Now what you have to take into account that you body metabolizes some of the o2 in the loop so you have to add 02 back to replace it.
Does that make sense?

This site has enough info to choke a dead horse.

Just noticed that a mod changed my signature. How long ago was that?

When I was riding submarines our atmosphere control used monoethanolamine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monoethanolamine for primary co2 removal. For emergency backup we had lithium hydroxide. http://www.google.com/search?q=lithium+hydroxide&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a The lithium hydroxide was placed in a hopper with a blower or could be spread in the open (less effective). I don't remember ever breaking open a lithium hydroxide canister.
Interesting note. the Lithium Hydroxide came in the same size and shape of canister as the chlorate candles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_oxygen_generator we would burn to create oxygen if the O2 generator (electrolysis) was unavailable or as on my 1st boat we had no O2 generator.
The chlorate candles were conveniently sized so that once used they (clinkers) could be jettisoned via the trash disposal unit.

One thing to note is that humans(and animals) will die from CO2 poisoning long before they run out of oxygen in an enclosed space.  So yeah, CO2 scrubbers/absorbers are necessary.

Options vary - as Roadking mentioned, there's several varieties.  The differences involve cost, efficiency, and how easy they are to regenerate.  Kinda like the moisture removal systems many of us use in our gun safes - Many you can simply bake off, some would require more complex chemical regeneration.  Some absorb more moisture than others.

Of course, another problem we have is that we don't actually have a biological low O2 alarm.  What we have is a CO2 buildup alarm - we can asphyxiate in a low oxygen without noticing if CO2 is also low.

It's the core for my idea about implimenting the death penalty - seal convict into relatively air tight room, then simply fill with nitrogen with a little positive pressure.  The other option would be to use a more air tight chamber and simply recycle the air, passing it through a scrubber.

Sodium hydroxide will work also. The CO2 is converted to sodium carbonate.
