Missouri has now banned Driving While Texting - for those under 21.

No doubt the new Missouri tradition for a young person's twenty-first birthday will be a crazy night at the club, followed by a pleasant driving/texting session.  Bottoms and cellphones up, baby!
Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God?

Couple of months ago, as I was heading to my grandmother's place, I came up behind a guy doing about 10 under the speed limit, weaving back and forth, blocking traffic, and generally being a complete hazard to everyone around him.

When the traffic finally let up to the point where I could pass the asshat, I look over and see a middle-aged looking guy, busily texting away on his damn cellphone.

To date, he's the only guy I've ever seen doing it.  Almost reported him, because he was driving like he was drunk.

Drivers who text or gab on cell phones without hands-free devices don't even rate setting phasers on stun. Go directly to photon torpedoes.

Yeah, I'm pretty guilty of this.  Just the other day I was on-call for work and was driving with one cell phone up to my ear and another one in my hand writing an email.  But, I'm in NoVA, so I think you have to do it around here to fit in.

In Indiana a law passed right before I got my driver's license.  The law had nothing to do with cell phones, it just banned people under 18 from driving with others for the first 90 days with their license.  The idea was that friends would be too much of a distraction for an inexperienced driver.

The exception was that the person's friend(s) had to be under 21.  Most immediately pointed out that this law was encouraging 16 year old drivers to ferry around people who could legally buy alcohol.

Wtf?

So, is being drunk when you're driving on Friday night is ok, because it helps you fit in?

Sarcasm fail.
Around here (that would be NoVA) it's a serious suburban rat race.  You see people on the phone driving more than not, or texting or facebooking from the driver's seat.

Just friggin' scary, that's what it is.

There are inattentive driving laws already on the books that *should* cover such idiocy, though...

i will admit to reading texts or checking facebook at stoplights. but i put the phone down when it turns green. if i am so in need of texting i will pull over or have a passenger do it. so far i never have needed too. i don't even like talking on the phone while driving (and i don't have a handsfree) but then again, i don't like talking just to talk on the phone anyway.

Sorry, my sarcasm was definitely missed...firstly, I was referring ONLY to texting while driving, I'd never drive drunk.  Secondly, around this area it's unusual to see someone without a phone in their hand, it seems, which what I trying to joke about (albeit poorly).  Truthfully, I'll check mine when stopped at a light/in traffic, but other than that, I don't mess with it much, except when I'm on call for work, and if I need to write an email, I pull over.
