After Reforger '88 the Brigade commander called me into his office and said since I was Maneuver Damage Officer, I was get a driver and a guard (both armed with fully loaded 1911's with spare mags), go to the finance office and go back and pay off the local German's for all the damage we did.

Finance gave me over $3,000,000 in Deutsche Marks.

We were less then 6 hours from the Swiss border.

I looked at the Driver and Guard and said "Who wants to live is Switzerland for the rest of their lives as millionaires ?"

Since I'm NOT currently in Switzerland you can guess how it turned out.

The big suck part was since we were MP's had gone out early to do the prep/signs the routes and escort convoys.  Then we were the last ones back as we had to do the same task in reverse.   SO I was gone 3.5 months.  Then as Maneuver Damage Officer, I spent another 2 months going around paying Germans.   Almost 6 months away from home.  =|
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Same here, payroll advance for post advanced training leave.  Coincidentally, this is the only time I saw a loaded M16 outside of a range, a DI was packing one along with the cash box for security.

In Yuma, we would go out to some of the auxillay fields for training.  In '96, we started having confrontations with illegals and smugglers, and began having ammo issued for our forays.

One of my college roommates friends started getting a small amount of extra money in his checks after he got out of Navy basic. Turned out that he had been detailed for something that came with extra money but no one ever told him. He was being used on some kind of shore patrol duty because he had nothing better to do while waiting to go to some kind of sub school. He had to take a class (1 day) and they issued him a big club and sent him out with a regular shore patrolman. I think he got like $12 a month extra for 3 or 4 months before it stopped.
