AVI to DVD conversion

Hey guys, I have a couple of video clips that I need to burn to DVD for Mom.  They are in .avi format.  I have Nero and understand it's a decent .avi to DVD converter, but is there another, better solution hanging around out there?

A $20 DVD player from Walmart which ALSO plays .avi files of a burned data-format CD or DVD is an option.  Especially if you plan on sending mom some home movies often.
On two occasions, I have been asked [by members of Parliament], "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able to rightly apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.

Does Windows Media Encoder make that conversion?  It's been awhile since I last used it, but I know it works with a number of different formats.  WME is a free add-on from MS, in case you have not heard of it.
