The riot squad was called out after the ladies started singing "God Bless America."  Truly scary stuff, that!

Intimidation is the old Chicago way.

Presidential Security is managed by the Secret Service.

So the decision to send in the Riot squad was made by a federal entity, not the local PD.

Since BHO is rather closely tied to Chi-town and filled his cabinet with similar minded folks, it stands to reason that one of his lackeys decided that intimidation of grannies was a sensible way to make them shut up and go away and get less press exposure.  Less press exposure for Tea Parties translates to greater inertia for Obama, since the Tea Party and 2010 election influence it has is the only thing stopping him from VAT, Amnesty, nationalizing 401k's and other ideas he has on the back burner.

Yes. 

The local cops did not want to call out the riot squad, but were pressured by BHO's folks to do so.  So, they called them out, marched them around for 15 minutes, and then they went back to the station.  The local LEOs went with the letter of BHO's request, but urinated all over the spirit of it.

Which is why I am not too sore at the locals.

Honestly, I can't imagine a situation where I care about this.

Were the old ladies beaten or something?  No.  Did SS policy call for deployment of 'riot' police for whatever reason?  Most likely.

It is silly, everyone admits that, probably even the Secret Service.  But they aren't known for a sense of humor, are they?

i worked at the mayflower in dc was some kinda impressed with the way the secret service did business. then we had the israeli peace delegation stay with us a couple weeks and saw ma whole nother level of security. they booked three floors lived on one with an empty buffer floor above and below. did background on whole staff and some folks got vacation we thought i might be one of em for a while.  interestingly enough they cut their stay short when we started picketing over contract negotiations.  apparently labor is strong there

too relaxed  i would leave work put down my back pack to unlock my bike and they were on it  was that mine?then we had to lock the bikes further from the doors .(bike bombs)   the us secret service got a lotta folks fired.  we'd come down the stairs to the employee entrance and they would be there with a metal detector. they got a ton of beer knives and the odd gun or two off the employees  with usually bad results for the worker. we used to joke about that   hotel security could only search your bag on the way out so we had learned to either just bring the amount of dope you could use or to hid the extra for the next day or shift.  one guy left an 8 ball in the butcher shop freezer for 3 months. he got suspended and couldn't come to get it.

To be fair, that guy is an actual Shabak operative, actually guarding a politician.

IME it is actually the US Secret Service that messes around less - when they brought Biden here they had blocked off a third of the campus and asked invitees to come 2 hours earlier 'to have time to thoroughly check everyone for weapons'.

('course, you must understand I live in a country where I get wanded... oh, three times a day, it's not that special to me.)

Actually, if you look at a LOT of SS and other executive protection details, the "arms crossed" over the belly or chest is not "relaxed", it's a neutral readiness position that is a compromise between drawing a weapon, and going hands-on in whatever manner may be needed.
