The Ian Carey Project, or more notably The Alan Parsons Project.  It seems to be a way of declaring that your band is not just another band, but a bold musical experiment.  Or something.  Seems a little pretentious.

Huh, until I read this post I could not name a "Project" band.  Does that give me bragging rights?
Gee, I'd love to see your data!

Given the results of a search, I do have bragging rights.  I will now depart, lest I lose them.

What about "The Keith Richards Project"? It's an experiment to see if a human being can literally be pickled.

Given his history if Mr Parsons wants to call something he does a "project" I think we oughta just let him.   [tinfoil]

You know, it'd be interesting to get Alan, Jim Steinman, Brian Eno, Brian Wilson, George Clinton, and Todd all in the same room, with a whole buncha talented musicians in the next room over, and see what they could crank together...

Except "The Alan Parsons Project" was never a "band", it was a massive collection of artists who collaborated under the guidance (or whatever) of Alan Parsons. Apparently the only track Alan himself did was the voice on "The Raven". Which is how I was influenced by it. I said if Parsons can do it, so can I. Take a concept and hire the best musicians you can find to realize it, that's presactly what I did.  ;)

BTW, I think Parsons went crapola once MTV took over the world and the 80's took hold. The first two, Tales and I Robot were the best IMHO. Those were done late 70's pre MTV. I can still remember my favorite record shop guy playing Tales for me the first time. "You gotta hear this" he said.  =D

I think the mods did it to him, actually.

Also, you seem to imply it's some type of ongoing widespread thing then list one band I've never heard of and one collaborative thingy from 30 years ago. Hardly an epidemic.  :P

I agree.  Two examples isn't even a trend.  It's statistically irrelevant.  Do you have more examples?
