7.62 suppressor question
« on: September 19, 2010, 09:55:18 PM »
Was looking into getting a suppressor for my AK and was wondering if when I read that it is made for 7.62mm, like for instance on the AAC website, if that is talking about the 7.62x39 or 7.62x51 or if they are the same thing.

To me, the cranking on mine is pretty effortless, at least on the coarse setting. Maybe if someone has arthritis or something, it would be more difficult for them." - Ben

If it's for an AK, the 7.62x39 would be the caliber. The 7.62x51 is 7.62 NATO, which is in most respects the same as .308 Winchester.

I don't know if the suppressors would be different, though.

I'd hope so...the 7.62x39 uses a .310-.312" bullet....

I should have phrased that differently, and said I didn't know anything about suppressors.

There are silencers for 7.62x39 and those for .308 - either would work on an AK, but if you ever desire to use it on a .308, get the heavier silencer.

Main advantages of the x39 silencers are that they're smaller and lighter, but usually (from my research a few years ago, could've changed) more expensive and less versatile (as I stated).

Subsonics are good, yes - and many AKs can fire 210gr loads with decent accuracy, stabilized enough to work. Real thumpers, and if you get a gas tube without vents they can be scary quiet, too!

Also, for what it's worth, the few thou difference between 7.62x39 and, say, .308 is WELL within the tolerances of a "30 cal" silencer. The baffle and exit apertures on a 7.62SD silencer from AAC is, if I remember correctly, nearly .365", for example. Plenty of room for any "30 cal", be it a 7.62x25, .303, .30-06, or similar. :)

How did I miss this question... generally, when a manufacturer notes a silencer as 7.62, they are referring to .308/30-06, NOT 7.62x39. Many manufacturers list x39 silencers as.... 7.62x39. :D

...and they're REALLY good for those applications, but only so-so on other platforms. But man, if you want an AK silencer, they are really THAT good. :)

Would an AK silencer be better on a 20" barrel or the shorter 16"?

I would just curious.  I bought an unconverted Saiga a few months back with the intent of converting it.  Maybe a 20" barrel would have been better.

Either will work, but based on previous experience, the 16" AK will be the better of the two choices if you're talking about 7.62x39 subsonics. For supersonic M43 ammo, either will be about the same. :)
