There's a similar thread in Round Table, but this is really a political issue.  Most foreign countries would not just frown over guns on board, but might arrest the owners and crew and confiscate the boats.  My thoughts on how to deal with this are below.

Quote
Seattle couple murdered by pirates; Would guns on board be smart?

Four Americans, including a Seattle couple, aboard a private yacht hijacked by Somali pirates are dead this morning, and readers reacting to the CBS story on-line are wondering why any of the pirates were taken alive. Likewise, after the Seattle Times caught up with the story at about 7:25 a.m., it didn’t take long for readers to suggest that the pirates be taught a lesson.

It's time to add another stanza to the Marine Corp Hymn.  Those that aren't shot, hang 'em from the yardarm!

There's basically nothing stopping you from taking guns on a boat/ship of your own, EXCEPT that most nations will not allow you to enter their ports while armed in such a way, so it's kinda pointless.
Not to mention you might not get looked kindly upon if you're boarded by the crew of a warship...

Actually, this is not a political post.  It is a post about international maritime law, and the laws of international ports of call.  Its also been debated and discussed in depth on this board before, and can be searched in the archives.
