Making a pot of Irish stew here in a bit.
« on: March 27, 2011, 04:11:16 PM »
Battling the tail end of the "creeping crud" that has been making the rounds here lately. On top of allergies and other stuff.

Anyway... I am CRAVING Irish stew. Lamb- $6.99 a lb.! It's always expensive but $7 a lb. for anything I tend to shy away from.

I almost said to hell with it but went ahead and bought 2 lbs. I'll just load it up with spuds and carrots to make up the difference.

So...what's cookin', folks?

Shame one can't get mutton in the US.

I'll be making some lentil soup in a bit for taking to work during the week.  Little tired of bread and cheese and fruit for lunch every day.  Really great recipe I found on Vegetarian Times.  All it needed to make it just right was some chicken broth.

I have wondered if Arab or Pakistani groceries carried it.

I like lentil soup. Actually, I like any stew/soup. Comfort food, I guess.

Favorite stews would have to be:

1. Rhode Island-style clam chowder. No cream/milk, no tomatoes, just clams, juice, potatoes and salt pork.
2. Irish stew
3. Beef stew
4. Chicken 'n' dumplings.

BTW, chicken broth will make darned near anything taste better. ;) When I make beans 'n' rice I simmer the beans in chicken broth. Always comes out good.

Not only does the halar meats place stock lamb, mutton and goat, but so does the grocery store near me that caters to the Hispanic part of the population.  Halal meat is on the expensive side while I suspect that the stuff in the grocery store is of lesser quality.  But so far I have neither had my tummy upset nor died from the less expensive (probably also cheaper) stuff.  However, I have learned to judge goat meat wrc age of the goat.  Unlike mutton I have not developed a taste for older goat.

Baking a halibut fillet with lemon & butter, brown rice and a salad dressed with a simple vinaigrette. Also treating myself to a La Crema chardonnay. One of the meals I don't make as much as I used to.

I love stews/one-pot meals. Made more than my share of venison stew over the years.

Put a bunch of cocktail franks in with a can of lentil soup.  Great snappy-fast potluck dish.

A wee bit salty, though.

Bkfst this AM:  Canned eggs + microwaved crisp hard salami broken up into it, olive oil, garlic powder, oregano and basil sprinkled over it, nuke it halfway, put a slice of Am. cheese on top, nuke the rest of the way.

The lamb is frying with a bit of flour. Carrots/spuds are ready to be thrown in. That lamb smell...reminds me of my Grandma.

I like halibut. But then I like anything out of the ocean. For the most part.

Octopus- Had it. Tastes exactly like you would expect it to. Rubbery. Flavorless.
Sea urchin - Blech.
Eel - awesome. I'd rather have half an eel than all the prime rib in Britain. Especially with that Japanese BBQ sauce.

I had bacon and eggs and bacon and hashbrowns and bacon and toast and bacon.

I'm baconfull.

It was my only meal today. I hope I work it off tomorrow. I have a great big thick ribeye in the frig for tomorrow.

I hadn't eaten much before shopping and I was hungry, so I got packaged sushi at the store where I bought the halibut yesterday. (Sushi was a a tradition for my ex and myself, which I haven't had much since the divorce.) It was like a junkie jonesing for a fix, I could almost feel the omega 3s hitting my arteries.

The halibut was awesome. And I miswrote. The wine was a Franciscan Estates 2009 chardonnay. Nice mineral notes stood up to the balsamic vinegar in the salad.

Sorry about that, I forgot the brand name and threw it away.  "Eggo" or something like that.  It's those liquified eggs in a little one pint carton like a milk carton.  Darned handy for a dedicated bachelor to keep in the fridge instead of actual eggs.

Eggo? I'll have to look for those. I run out of eggs often, and I loves me some chickenfruit.

Yeah, they're not canned, they're in a carton, but they keep for... what, two months in the fridge? I tend to keep one on hand for frosting and whatnot, as they're pasteurized, so they're safe to eat raw. :)

Mutton is mine for the buying at several stores within bicycle riding distance.  Mostly groceries aimed at th elatin population.

Also...I love lentil soup.  Back in college when I had time, I would buy lentils at the hippie grocery and make it from scratch.

Lentil stew, split pea soup with a ham hock, elk stew... those are my three BIG weaknesses. No matter how sick I feel, I seem to always be able to at least eat a small mug of any of them. They're my chicken soup. :)
