1909 VDB...
« on: April 12, 2011, 05:59:01 PM »
Found one in my accumulation of wheat pennies. Not the venerated "S" mint unfortunately but still a pennt that's worth about $7.

"S"mint goes for $900.  :O

Good for you . . . I've got a couple that were found in circulated coins some years (OK, quite a few years) back. Now it's unusual to find a wheat penny of any sort in change, though I did get a few last year. (Common dates.)

Most interesting recent find was a proof nickel in my change . . . someone, somewhere, must have cracked it out of a proof set and spent it.

I understand that a lot of old silver is showing up these days in change as those who hoarded it pass on and those that dont know spend it. Good to keep an eye out for it. A silver dime is worth about $3 just in the silver right now.  ;)

It's been decades since I found a silver coin in my change . . . but I'll keep my eyes open.

I've been looking for a 1943 copper cent since I was a kid, but all I found were the steel cents.  I'm not sure, but I think the '43 coppers are rarer than the 1909 SVDB coin.

Here's one, I was digging a late 18th, early 19th century site with the CT archeology people and found me a 1910 dime. Black but looked to be in nearly uncirculated conditon otherwise. Totally irrelevent to the site but there it was.

When I was a checker at a grocery store years ago, we had some kids coming in and spending Morgan dollars.  They come in one day saying their mom told them they couldn't spend them anymore.  I never got any, but it was funny to watch the other checkers buy them up.

Some years back, I was talking to a teller who told me about how someone came in with some Liberty and St. Gaudens double eagles to deposit.

They accepted the deposit - face value, $20 per coin.

Teller was happy.
