New motorcycle thread
« on: March 26, 2005, 08:05:08 PM »
So on the old roundtable this motorcycle thread had 100+ replies in it:
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=106747&highlight=gs500

a few updates since january.  I've put about 4k miles on the '89 GS500 bike since then.  I've been hitting the great bay area twisties.  Motorcycling great.  Now if only I had a scabbard to transport my long guns with.

and now some pictures from a recent ride I did:

I'm the one in the red aerostich

guy on a busa landing a wheelie.

i'm in the middle on the black rat GS500, we're up on fairfax bolinas near mount tam.

wide angle shot of all of us hanging out.

rather dark shot of us crossing the golden gate bridge.

That was a fun day.

YOu put 4K miles in the middle of the wettest winter we've ever had?
I salute you!

Thanks for reminding our friends --- graphically -- that we in Northern Cali have the most varied, interesting, delightful bikers' geography in the universe.
Ain't it great?

don't salute me, salute Aerostich Smiley

When the weather gets perfect (mid-april)  we should have a big NorCal motorcycle group ride.
That would be seriously fun.

Nice pics Smiley .......... I have managed to get out a few times - first was actually Jan1st!!  I have some quite good riding gear but have to admit - while I used to be an ''all weathers'' rider long ago - no more.  Cleaning the bike is a total PITA!!  Hope very soon to get out a lot more.

My son had a superb SV650 until 2003 but now has ''mellowed'' towards his old man's cruiser direction!  He has a VS1400, which he has worked on all this winter - new paint job and a very handsome billet rear wheel ... hard to show it all off in one pic.  This is a ten year old bike!!

Then my ''steed'', a pic some have seen.  VTX1300C4

I think i'm going to get a used '04 sv650 this fall.  It'll make a great second bike.  And with hard bags and an aftermarket windscreen I'll use it for some light sport touring.

My GS500 died Sad
I was hoping it would survive til this fall.  Basically I have two options.
A) buy a new bike and sell the GS500 for parts
B) find a used GS500 engine, do the swap myself and sell it this fall.

Which would you all do?

Atek - I think if you could make it work - sell off parts.  A used SV650 beckons, somewhere, I am sure.  My son had one and his BIL too - superb bikes and incredible handling.  They have both now moved on - into cruiser country .. see my son's VS above.

Tell ya what - my son's SV when sold over a year ago - was a '99 IIRC - looked showroom condition and had about 6k on it ... he had added bits and it sold for $3,500 - darned bargain.  His BIL more recently sold his - which was probably a 2001 perhaps - I think he got approx $3k ....  there are some good ones out there.

Hey somebody round here has to think with their danglies rather than their head. Atek, the GS dieing is gods way of telling you to buy something more expensive and faster. He does things like that you know. A friend swears blind that when her 98 Blade went up in flames in a layby a couple of years ago she heard a a strangely deep voice saying "buy an R1, Buy an R1" . She's jewish as well so possibly related to Moses?

Break it for parts, save pennies or if a new engine is a pittance replace it and sell it.

You don't say what is wrong with the engine, have you thought of fixing it yourself with secondhand parts etc? If it proves unfixable then you just resell any parts you bought and you've just learnt a bit more about how engines go together. If it works you're riding a bike that is running because of your wielding of the "ratchet of power". A pleasure in and of itself.

Chris is trying to lead you to the dark side of the force with his mentions of cruisers, beware, he will lead you down the path of different polishing cloths for different parts of the bike and leave you with a mind corrupted by the polish fumes(which would explain why Harleys still sell). Be strong, buy an SV Smiley.

Hurray, GS is fine... The ignition pickup somehow got "rotated", so it got unrotated and now it works fine.
I'm glad I have 6 months to decide on a next bike.  I think the F4i, the 636, and the new VFR are also quite sexy.  3 very different bikes I know, but until I get to ride them I have know way of knowing which I'd prefer.

There a few motorcyclists in Southern California.

A friend's website:

http://www.wrenchwhore.com/

A few videos are here:

http://www.sumguyz.com/video/weekly/

The  Westlake video is one of CW's night rides.

Further south, a slower scenic ride, a bit more than half way through, there's a wash that's not really obvious unless you know the road...  I've been there for several crashes when the water is deeper...

Wanna go faster?

The pace picks up a bit toward the end...

Then, from up the coast in the Pacific North Wet:

Enjoy, but don't over twist your wrist.

Chris, you're a very bad man. Ever since you posted the photo of your kid's Intruder I've been scouring the classifieds and the local bike shops looking for one of my own.

...like I need another hobby...or a new (to me) bike. I have, however found a really nice DRLA carb setup for one Cheesy .

Here's what my next bike looks sort of like.

I'm going to start with a '04 SV650S, put a chin spoiler, K&N Air filter, have Aftershocks redo the suspension, Carbon fiber can, paint the whole thing matte black.
Call it the SV Dark.

Call me crazy but I think that would be totally badass.
