Very cool. What is it from the old days that you miss? And when was that?
Mostly, I miss when NCOs could be NCOs without fear of baseless accusations ruining their careers.
I miss when chain's of command didn't default to the private's side when there was an accusation.
I hate the "badge hunting" mentality of much of the senior leadership in tradoc, who are more concerned with the private's *expletive deleted*in feelings than training him/her to standard.
The discipline level is *expletive deleted* in the Army, largely due to the lack of ability to annihilate it in basic training, when they're new.
In fact, there's an article in the Army times this month that talks about the rampant disrespect and lack of discipline. Why leave that to a squad leader to deal with, when it's already entrenched? Much better to annihilate a private and get it the *expletive deleted* out of them before it's firmly set in.
While I do believe that there are many instances where it's appropriate to turn off the screaming and yelling, there are also many instances where it's absolutely appropriate to tear a soldier a new *expletive deleted*, make them fear for their life, and destroy any last vestiges of disobedience, ego, or attitude.
Like my drill sergeants did with me 11 years ago.
THat said, the first sergeant at the company I am assisting (I'm a reservist now, so I'm only here a few weeks), is an old school DS from when things were different. He is much less likely to hammer a DS for things like that.
