On the Trail again
« on: June 28, 2011, 09:55:09 PM »
Here at Fort Leonard Wood for my annual two week rotation as a drill sergeant.

Got placed with a company in week two. Starting BRM and stuff, which is good because I'm excellent at training that.

But i'll tell you. I long for the old days.

Basic training ain't what it used to be.

Still teaching dime/washer for BRM?

Still teaching dime/washer for BRM?

We do it for reinforcement training when there's down time in the schedule, or in the bays during personal time or whatever.

But there's no time blocked off for that anymore, now that we have tools like the LMTS and EST.

Additionally, the Army has taken a very progressive (and needed) approach to teaching BRM in basic now. Gone are the days of "EVERYONE MUST LOOK THE SAME AND DO IT THE SAME!!!!!oneoneoneeleventy"

Modifying stances and equipment somewhat in order to gain more stable, comfortable position is encouraged. Many techniques now seen in basic training come straight out of CATC, which is a tremendously helpful shooting course that I took a few years back.

How about the qual course. Pop-ups at 50 to 300 yards or something different?

Pop ups from 50-300 meters, like it used to be. SOmetimes one at a time, sometimes two.

DIfference now is that instead of 20 rounds foxhole, 20 rounds prone unsupported,

Now you do 20 rounds prone supported, 10 rounds prone unsupported, and 10 rounds kneeling.

Very cool. What is it from the old days that you miss? And when was that?

Ah..  Ft Leonard Wood basic training in summer!  That is where I did mine back in 1994 (AIT too).  Still hot and humid as ever?

Very cool. What is it from the old days that you miss? And when was that?

Mostly, I miss when NCOs could be NCOs without fear of baseless accusations ruining their careers.

I miss when chain's of command didn't default to the private's side when there was an accusation.

I hate the "badge hunting" mentality of much of the senior leadership in tradoc, who are more concerned with the private's *expletive deleted*in feelings than training him/her to standard.

The discipline level is *expletive deleted* in the Army, largely due to the lack of ability to annihilate it in basic training, when they're new.

In fact, there's an article in the Army times this month that talks about the rampant disrespect and lack of discipline. Why leave that to a squad leader to deal with, when it's already entrenched? Much better to annihilate a private and get it the *expletive deleted* out of them before it's firmly set in.

While I do believe that there are many instances where it's appropriate to turn off the screaming and yelling, there are also many instances where it's absolutely appropriate to tear a soldier a new *expletive deleted*, make them fear for their life, and destroy any last vestiges of disobedience, ego, or attitude.

Like my drill sergeants did with me 11 years ago.

THat said, the first sergeant at the company I am assisting (I'm a reservist now, so I'm only here a few weeks), is an old school DS from when things were different. He is much less likely to hammer a DS for things like that.

Family friend just graduated from there in May.  I sort of wondered if you were one of his DIs....

He is in Combat Engineer training now and then off to A'stan.

Went to Lost in the Woods summer of '83.  A-5-3.

Drive on, Drill Sergeant, Drive ON !!!
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

Gas chamber was today. Pics will come tomorrow. I'm *expletive deleted*ing exhausted.

I insisted on going into the chamber with no gas mask. My theory is: if I'm asking the privates to breathe CS, I should be doing it too.

From the drill sergeant's creed:

I will lead by example, never requiring a soldier to attempt any task I would not do myself.

So, after staying in the chamber for several minutes with no gas mask, then marching back (in a CS covered uniform),

I'm pretty well wiped out today. Pics will come tomorrow

what has changed now that DADT has been scrapped?
Politicians and bureaucrats are considered productive if they swarm the populace like a plague of locust, devouring all substance in their path and leaving a swath of destruction like a firestorm. The technical term is "bipartisanship".

During yearly quals there was always one dumbass, usually a PFC, who would come straight back to work from the chamber.
