Chinook helicopter shot down...
« on: August 06, 2011, 02:23:47 PM »
...and 31 troops killed, twenty of which were SEALs from the unit that got Osama along with 7 Afghan SpecOps, the flight crew and others. Really, really not happy right now.  :'(

Aside from how bad this is already it brought back some memories from my own deployment there. *sigh* I spent most of my time in 2006 trying to find Qari Ismail, the guy responsible for shooting down another Chinook in 2005 which killed 8 SEALs, 8 Rangers and the flight crew who were on a rescue mission. Got close enough to even see the prick with a drone a few times but we were never allowed to shoot him because he had this habit of surrounding himself with women and kids.

Words fail me.

I am so deeply sorry and feel for the families.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

What pisses me off more is saying who and/or what was on board before all the families have been notified.  Come on, now you have a bunch of more than need to be worried family members waiting on a visit that may not happen.  I wish I could just choke out the bastard that revealed this info prematurely.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

That's awful! family notification should be a priority.
Thoughts and prayers/condolences to the families.

And we all know that the goat raping pederasts are giggling with glee now that they've taken out some of those who killed OBL...

this reminds me of the downed copter during the Carter failed rescue attempt.
Would R.O.E have anything to do with the copter being shot?

Very different situation in that one. The helis weren't shot down during the Iran rescue attempt. Mechanical failures and weather (the haboob sandstorm) caused the abort decision, then a helicopter crashed into a C-130 while attempting to hovertaxi and that caused the casualties.

I'd say that this C-130 being shot down is a lot more similar to the crash of the Chinook that was attempting the rescue during Operation Redwing (as detailed in Marcus Luttrell's book Lone Survivor). This might be the shootdown that kgbsquirrel is referring to?

Back to topic, condolences to those who perished, I've spent quite a bit of time working on various programs to improve helo defense and survivability, so it's news like this that really pisses me off and makes me sad.
