Aren't the Ultimaks a little steep on pricing?  Also, do they insulate the optic from the barrel heat at all?

You can do it cheap or you can do it right.

“Fear of death increases in exact proportion to increase in wealth,” Hemingway once said. Today, many of us have become rich in the currency of cowardice. We have so many things and so few experiences. We are desperate to live as long as possible, not as large as possible. We are so afraid to say goodbye to the world that we never say hello.

1 I've never liked aimpoints 2 I really find it hard to believe any piece of electronics is totally unaffected by that much heat.

Plenty of guys are running Aimpoints on their AKs, mounted on an Ultimak without any problems. It really helps that the battery compartment is up on top vs. on the bottom like an EoTech.

Done right: http://atteroarms.com/products.html

I was SO excited when I saw this. LaRue had the AK Iron-Dot for awhile, but ceased production, and has yet to bring it back.

However, some of their employees (from Attero Arms, linked above NOT LaRue sorry.., if not the owner got caught shilling on AK47.com and elsewhere recently.

Midwest Industries also came out with a unit, and I like it's looks a little better.

O rly? I knew people hated LaRue but I hadn't heard they'd been caught shilling.

CRITICAL edit above.

Attero was the one shilling. LaRue has their own entire sub-forum over there, no need to shill anything. Except maybe go around the net and tease ARMS for trying to patent the number "17".

And like most of the US Army, (which thankfully is getting rid of the beret for regular units), no one in Russia knows who wear the beret properly either.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

I am not very familiar with AKs, but the idea that the Ultimak and similar rails clamp onto the barrel has always bugged me. It seems to work fine for enough people, so I don't know. I've always liked the Larue iron dot concept, people seem to think the rear sight base is a solid enough mounting platform, and it's a pretty streamlined and lightweight option, but it seems like they haven't been making them for years. Midwest Industries finally came out with something similar recently: http://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=421&CFID=21582219&CFTOKEN=14140114 I can't say from any experience, but it seems like it would be an ideal solution for putting a red dot on an AK.

Ultimaks clamp to the gas tube, not the barrel.

Ultimaks clamp to the gas tube, not the barrel.

They replace the gas tube, with a couple straps under the barrel and screwed down tight.

I've also heard more than a few anecdotal reports that properly installed and torqued Ultimaks have improved the accuracy of AK/AKM variants noticeably.

I suspect it significantly alters or reduces barrel whip when firing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeeeFxA_9nA All barrels flex to some degree or another when fired, the trick is to get them to do it consistently shot to shot.

However, heat is still the Achilles heel of the design. AK's do get ferociously hot in short order. I've charred/smoked wooden handguards in just two mags/60 rounds of slow-fire, one shot every 5-10 seconds or so.
I promise not to duck.

What would be nice is an AK trunnion with the top milled as an integral rail- no goofy conversion of the  iron sight mounting. Just a nice rock solid steel rail- yeah, for most folks it would have to be a factory gun or install, but still..
