Well, that's just not like me.
« on: August 31, 2011, 03:36:55 PM »
I just "invited" some people to "connect" with me on LinkedIn. I feel all, uh, Tweety or whatever this social network experience is supposed to feel like.

My soulless, corporate overlords wanted me to have a profile on LinkedIn, so I have been there for a year or two now. And now people I know are appearing. Some of you are there, but I don't know if I should "connect" with you or not. What is the protocol for this sort of thing? Also, why would people show up, with no apparent connections between us?

Thank you for answering my dumb questions, I'm sure I have a very dazed, confused look on my facebook right now.

With EXTREMELY FEW exceptions, I'm not friends with anyone on linkedin or facebook that I don't personally know in a face-to-face manner.  And I will ignore requests on either site from people that I can't put a real-life-face and shared experiences to the name.

I dunno ... I've had a LinkedIn account for several years now and I'm always getting emails, but I seem to have forgotten my login/password  ;/

Most of the people that I get invites from I sorta know from working with them, but a lot of them I've never met FTF, just worked via phone and internet.

 Not a fan of linkedin.
With FB, etc, you send an invite and it goes out ONCE.
Linkedin will spam whoever you invite on a nearly daily basis for weeks.
It's
quite
annoying.

And the entire premise of LinkedIn is that it gives people warm fuzzies that they might somehow be able to use LinkedIn to get another job, should they lose their current one.  =|

I thought the entire premise was that people only joined Linkedin when they were looking for a new job.   But it was supposed to be the Facebook of business.

Within the past month, I've been contacted by three corporate recruiters via LinkedIn.  Two of them were Microsoft and Yahoo.  I'm not looking right now, but the site seems to be serving its intended purpose.

I have a linkedin acct and occasionally get messages from business associates, but like Tallpine, can't remember my login info and even if I could it's served very little purpose.
However, since I'm now in the job market, is this something I should consider?

I...don't think so.

IMO, it couldn't hurt.  Networking is how a lot of people get hired, but don't forget the popular job websites like Monster, CareerBuilder, etc.  Be aware that building your network of contacts takes time.

Also see if there are any job-search sites that cater to your particular field.  For example, dice.com focuses on engineering and technical openings.  There might be sites that specialize in your career interests.

Hey 280, you might want to find out what Mabs actually does for NFCU and then you might want to change financial institutions.  I mean if they would hire him.... [popcorn]

Hey 280 also maybe you can find out who Potato Girl is for us. >:D

In my twisted little mind I'm seeing repeated calls of, "Hello, NFCU, yes, are you by any chance familiar with NFCU employees Mabs or Potato Girl? If so could you put either of them on the line for me? Thank you."   >:D

I'll wait to see what kind of candy he sends me before I decide whether to move on or not. The word butterfinger comes to mind for some reason.  ;)
