kcal the proper representation of what we call a calorie.  So, he's correct, 8000 calories.

Interesting, I stand corrected then.

No no. When talking about metabolisms, "1 calorie" all of a sudden means "1000 calories", except when it doesn't. I don't know why it ever became accepted to do this, but the entire world does anyway.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

On the non religious side:
http://www.nutristrategy.com/activitylist.htm

Weighted average of farming activities is ~500kcal/hr
16 hour day 8000kcal
BMR for in shape person 1600+
9600 calories a day.
With a 30/20/40% calorie mix (lunches are usually much smaller than dinner), that's 3960 for dinner...not 5000, but still a damn lot.

When I was competitive rowing and swimming, I would put away 8-10k a day...it's not that hard to do.

Sounds about right for when I was logging full time  ;)

Maybe add a little extra for elevation because all my work was 9,000'++ ASL, some of it nearly 12,000'.

Yes. "Food calories" are actually kilocalories.
