Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Bring me my Broadsword and a clear understanding.
Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

I know that pirates referred to each other as "Hearties" - a suggestion that one "had heart", was of an adventerous bent and pretty much up for a fight or round of wenching at any moment.  But I cannot recall pirates ever referring to each other as being related to the fast food chain.

Little known fact, Las Vegas was actually originally founded by pirates.

Unlike traditional Western societies of the time, many Caribbean pirate crews of European descent operated as limited democracies. Pirate communities were some of the first to instate a system of checks and balances similar to the one used by the present-day United States and many other countries. The first record of such a government aboard a pirate sloop dates to the 17th century.[32]

Both the captain and the quartermaster were elected by the crew; they, in turn, appointed the other ship's officers. The captain of a pirate ship was often a fierce fighter in whom the men could place their trust, rather than a more traditional authority figure sanctioned by an elite. However, when not in battle, the quartermaster usually had the real authority. Many groups of pirates shared in whatever they seized; pirates injured in battle might be afforded special compensation similar to medical or disability insurance.

There are contemporary records that many pirates placed a portion of any captured money into a central fund that was used to compensate the injuries sustained by the crew. Lists show standardised payments of 600 pieces of eight ($156,000 in modern currency) for the loss of a leg down to 100 pieces ($26,800) for loss of an eye. Often all of these terms were agreed upon and written down by the pirates, but these articles could also be used as incriminating proof that they were outlaws.

Pirate captains often took better care of thier crew than any of the modern navies of the time.

Not sayin' that navies or merchants were better - far from it.  But I'll admit that I was thinking as much of modern-day pirates as the worse examples of the 16-1700's when I made that last comment.

Much. Thank you. You know there's some accounts that say Anne Bonny and Blackbeard co-conspired on a couple sails.

That was later in her "career." The whole cross dressing thing didn't last long after Mary was found out. They still dressed like men when it suited them (if they were about to be boarded by LEO types) but otherwise it seems they discovered a bit of shock value in being female while slashing someone's throat.

When Nassau was a well-known pirate hang out, a lot of the bigger names from that time period worked together on different raids and such. That was about 1718/19. She wasn't sailing with Jack Rackham until late 20/21, just before she was captured.

Damned phone. Had to drag out the netbook.
Where did you get this bit of info? Just out of curiosity.
Dad (though we no longer speak, for many reasons) was adamant that we were/are direct descendents of Mary Read. That whole part of the family came from Charleston, S.C., too. Not that I would be proud of that ancestry, but it isn't so far-fetched. (the pirate part, not the S.C. part)

No Scout. Don't ask him to bring it out again. I promise it would do nothing for you.

Jamis and Eric - Pirate captains were actually elected by the crew and could quickly be un-elected. Pirate ships are often used as examples of true democracy. Everyone aboard being equal and the higher positions being elected in and earning a slightly higher share of the take (based on their skills to do the job).

But like you said Eric - this is pirates of old, not today.
