That was later in her "career." The whole cross dressing thing didn't last long after Mary was found out. They still dressed like men when it suited them (if they were about to be boarded by LEO types) but otherwise it seems they discovered a bit of shock value in being female while slashing someone's throat.
When Nassau was a well-known pirate hang out, a lot of the bigger names from that time period worked together on different raids and such. That was about 1718/19. She wasn't sailing with Jack Rackham until late 20/21, just before she was captured.

Dad (though we no longer speak, for many reasons) was adamant that we were/are direct descendents of Mary Read. That whole part of the family came from Charleston, S.C., too. Not that I would be proud of that ancestry, but it isn't so far-fetched. (the pirate part, not the S.C. part)
