value of original box, manuals, etc.
« on: October 08, 2011, 06:32:09 PM »
I was looking at a used Wilson CQB today.  The shop doesn't have the box, manuals, and only one mag. What do you think that takes off the value? I'm trying to negotiate, and shopping online prices that include all the original docs and such.  I'd think you would hold onto those things considering the price of these things.

The box, manuals, and original accessories are much more important with a "collectible" firearm than with a run-of-the-mill, working gun. That said, they are ALWAYS worth something. Even if the gun isn't a collectible, the absence of those things may reduce the pool of potential buyers. I don't regard a Wilson CQB as a collector firearm, but rather a "working" firearm. How much value the original packaging and manual might be worth is up to you.

The value of the box and papers varies with the collectibility of the gun. When I sold my 2nd Generation Colt SAA, the box and papers probably added a couple of hundred to the value. With my Python, I figure it was $100. With my modern guns (Remington 700, etc), I've thrown away the boxes.

I think I'd go practical on this.

One magazine -- what's a second magazine cost?  $20.

No box -- means you have to get a box for it.  $10-$15.

No manual -- it's a 1911, do you really need one?

I'm oK with just the gun.  Just want to know how legitimate my counter offer can sound.  I do think he is a couple of hundred bucks high on it...but since it is local, I'll probably come back somewhere in the middle, with it sans accessories.

Wilson ships their guns in a zip-up nylon gun case, not a box. The gun case is available about everywhere for $10 without the Wilson logo or $30 with the logo.  A Wilson magazine is closer to $30 than $20.
