Personally, while I think Buscemi is alright as an actor, I've never understood all the hype. If Wikipedia is correct, however, he is quite a mensch.

It seems he was a NY City fireman in the early '80s. He went back to his fire station on 12 September, 2001, and put in a week of 12-hour shifts, digging through the rubble.

I've always thought he was a funny guy and I like most of his work.

I read an article about this in Firehouse magazine.  A very unpretentious man.
