Christmas Music
« on: December 01, 2011, 05:25:47 AM »
Here I am sitting in Kuwait, thousands of miles away from home, sand all around, not much in the Christmas mood but I am listening to Christmas music in hopes it wears on me.
There are five things, above all else, that make life worth living: a good relationship with God, a good woman, good health, good friends, and a good cigar.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you, Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.  One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Bacon is the candy bar of meats!

Only the dead have seen the end of war!

Yes, thank you.

As someone who pretty much despises Christmas (work in logistics for a while.)  I can't stand the radio stations  (and we have two or three here in Chicago) that go "Alll Christmas - All the Time!!".

But if I have to hear it, Mannheim Steamroller is simply fantastic.
Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.

Thanks guys.

Love Mannheim Steamroller and like you hate it when a station goes to all Christmas all the time for a month.

I am ok with it for the most part and would be ok with it all day Christmas Eve and Christmas day but not all month long.

Oh and while this isn't my first Christmas away from home since being in the Guard it will be the first since 2006.  And then like this year I was home for Thanksgiving.

2006 - Christmas in Baghdad
2007 - Christmas at home, got leave during training to go back to Iraq
2008 - 2010 - Christmas at home
2009 - Christmas Eve was told that this deployment was coming up
2011 - Christmas in Kuwait
2012 - ? ? ?

I will pray for your safety!

Christmas music is OK.

24/7 on the local radio station from Thanksgiving on is a problem.

The fact that the wife and kids love this station this time of year is a major PITA.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra is very good for music.

I can't find the classical stuff I like on youtube.

So I'll just hit up the other half of my christmas musical leanings.

Nothing wrong with this.

Oh goody.
 =D

So, now a tale of my twisted childhood.

My mother is addicted to christmas music. It usually started around holloween.

At least two full months of christmas music. Every year.

Luckly, that is about the time it took for her to go through her entire collection twice.
Now, I think its once. And she's fairly eclectic.

But no matter how varied, its still christmas music. It can only get so varied.

So I have a peculer love hate relashionship with christmas music.

I really like some of the more obscure traditional stuff. If you've ever heard The Cherry Tree carol, thats my favorite.
Plus, i'm cool with Handle's Masseh. Not the halaluhia chorus, but the rest is good.
Basically, if I only get to hear it when Mom's got the music going, I like it. If it gets played anywhere else, I hate it. Seriously, you can only take so much before you start drooling and banging your head against an unyeilding surface.

Anyway, this is my defense mechinism.

Completly non tradition and somewhat twisted christmas music.

Best if you announce your intentions.  Go crawling under tent flaps w/out an invite could get you shot.

Prime example of my issue.

Do you have any idea of how many good/bad/mediocre versions of that song are out there?

And IT'S EVERYWHERE!!!

Liz that could be said of most traditional Christmas music.
