Saw similar ones on ThinkGeek's website.  Thought they were a good idea, but haven't tried them personally.

It says "dishwasher safe", but please don't.  The dishwasher can etch the glass.

Some 7/8" or 1" ball bearings and your existing whiskey glasses would be a lot cheaper, but I suppose wouldnt be as cute.  (On the "rocks"! <snicker>)

Well the glasses can be etched by a dishwasher you're right, but I think they also maybe talking about the soapstones.

Ball bearings would probably etch the glassware as well over time.

They work, but they don't chill as well as an equivalent amount of ice, so you need a bunch of them in a glass.  A package of 9 is only good for a couple of glasses if you want it good and chilly.  Aside from that, they don't seem to change the taste at all.  I say they work as advertised, are rather novel, and are worth the $20.

Put the freaking bottle in the freezer?

Completely open a half gallon milk carton and wash it out.  Put an inch of freshly boiled distilled water in the bottom and freeze.  Center your 750 ml bottle in the carton, add more water to fill the carton and freeze.  Unmold the ice jacketed bottle, smooth the jacket, return to the freezer.  If you have frozen vodka, have fresh cracked pepper and citrus rinds ready.

I don't see the problem with slightly watering down whiskey anyway.
Maybe a rare occurence, but then you only have to get murdered once to ruin your whole day.

I'd be worried about some bacteria that may be deep in the pores, better boil well before using.

Boiling rocks will make you think twice about putting them in your drink. I expect the water to turn brown.

Based on what I remember from earth science in 9th grade, cold rocks will have approx. 1/160th the chilling power of melting ice.  If you don't want to water-down your drink but still get the chilling power of ice, use come contraption to contain the ice/water as it melts.  I think I've seen reusable plastic ice cubes which are just thin HDPE shells filled with water.  You freeze them and then let the ice inside thaw while they float in your drink

But when sipping whiskey if you are going to ice it, you don't want it ice cold.  Just take some of the warmth off of it.
