Gadget forums--same threads, different gadgets
« on: May 01, 2012, 02:08:29 PM »
For years I pretty much just hung out on gun forums, with the occasional foray to a motorcycle forum or something like that for a quick question.

Months back I joined a couple of knife forums, and more recently a guitar forum. It's funny how the threads on all of them could be interchanged simply by substituting the names and brands and types of widgets.

Some thread title examples:
1. Do I have a (gun/knife/guitar) addiction? (Usually the thread is an excuse to brag about how many guns or knives or guitars the poster has)
2. I can't decide between a (Springfield Trophy Match and Kimber Gold Match/Beltrame swinguard or AGA Campolin picklock/Fender Telecaster or Les Paul Epiphone). Invariably, one poster will advise the OP to buy (Ed Brown/Pat Havlin/Ibanez).
3. Is the quality of (Colt/AB/Gibson) going downhill? Again, there will be a poster advising to buy (Ed Brown/Pat Havlin/Ibanez).
4. Which (gun/knife/guitar) for (daily carry/work/weddings)? Expect advice to buy (Ed Brown/Pat Havlin/Ibanez).

I believe it's possible to have one forum that covers a couple of hundred different niches. Just click a radio button for your hobby when you log on, and each thread will be adjusted to reflect the hobby you chose, whether it's guns or knives or guitars or motorcycles or computers or cookware.

APS is an exception. I don't think there's anything as eclectic anywhere else.

Monkeyleg,

I don't think you have a forum addiction. I think you just want to brag about how many different toys you have.  :P

The price of the toys doesn't matter, either.  Someone posts on a fishing board:
"Just sold my 21' single engine bay boat, looking at a 25' twin engine offshore boat in the $50,000 range"
And some jackass will come along and tell them to buy a $200,000 40' boat.

Well it does have a MPI tested hull and shot peened props. You wouldn't want your family to be stranded at sea (or worse) because you bought an inferior boat..

I APS is unique because:

A. Most of us were sick of the standard gun forem battles du jour.
B. The majority of topics require more then just a post and run.
C. Because of b. our threads tend to become more conversational (which is the secondary cause of thread drift. The first being the quantity of smartasses around here  ;) ) and reading the OP and just posting to it is discouraged.

But if we were women, we could say that what we had was no longer meeting our needs, and we seized the empowerment to explore our potential, discarding the traditional roles that kept us trapped.

Good thing women don't do that. Imagine how many shoes/clothes/purses they would buy. And a new bottle of something-or-other every day, until the shower caddy overflows.  :P

Have you ever heard that crap come out of our mouths? By "our" I'm referring to your APS women.

And you're complaining about what? That she's clean?  ;/  Get over it. She could be buying things that you'd find slightly more alarming. Like hemlock or nightshade.

Mrs. smith, I hate to say this, but the boys have a point. this isn't a topic for a battle of the sexes. We are all guilty of wanting "better".

Well no, but I used to watch the last ten minutes of 'Oprah' while waiting for the local news to come on, so I like to use the jargon I picked up.

was directed at the boys always upgrading their toys even if what they have works fine and serves a purpose, they'll find some reason to upgrade, even if just for bragging rights. I didn't address why or how women shop, so was not a battle.  =D

You have to put an asterisk after this one though as they definately went with the cheaper non-chrome-lined model.

Happens with some amount of frequency. Though it's usually owner/operator error. Overloaded, improper weight distribution, forgot to put in drain plug, swamped in seas the owner "thought he could handle," shot hole in bottom of boat (can't find reference now but this happened in GA few years ago), ran aground and damaged hull then got free and sunk in deeper water, the list goes on, but drain plug is most common.
