Brain chip reads man's thoughts

The 'chip' reads brain signals
A paralysed man in the US has become the first person to benefit from a brain chip that reads his mind.

Matthew Nagle, 25, was left paralysed from the neck down and confined to a wheelchair after a knife attack in 2001.

The pioneering surgery at New England Sinai Hospital, Massachusetts, last summer means he can now control everyday objects by thought alone.

The brain chip reads his mind and sends the thoughts to a computer to decipher.

KEWL BEANS if the tech is applied in an appropriate fashion, like aiding para/quadrapalegics gain additional independence and self reliance in their lives.
I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

Sunday it felt a little better, but it was quite irritated from me rubbing it.

There is a lot of interesting research going on.  Myoelectric (motorized) limbs will eventually be as good (or better) than natural limbs.

http://www.animatedprosthetics.com/

I heard a while ago two interesting experiments.  One was neural implants that allowed monkeys to play a game using robot arms.  First the monkeys moved their own arms to move the robotic limbs, eventually they could move the robotic limbs by thought alone.  The other was a man in NY linked to a robotic limb in Australia, through the internet.  The man could shake hands with the people in Australia, and feel it in NY.

It's going to be interesting.

I always figured that if the Galaxy ever did spawn a species like the Borg that it would be us.

The Borg are here and they are us... Cheesy

I imagine that this technology (with extreme refinement) could be used to implement the equivalent of telepathy between individuals.

Of course once that tech is refined it is just one small step towards the govt monitoring every thing every one thinks and in turn sending control signals to those individuals that do not tow the party line that controls their every thought and action from that point on.

Muhahahaha...

Seriously folks - this tech has a great potential for good but an even greater potential for evil if developed to an easily imagined level.

The first to benefit eh? And how many more? Hundreds? Thousands? Tens of thousands?

And then what? IOW, when will it be used to harm us (thought crimes)?
