Why not ask, "Why do snakes need guns in Walmart?" The snake got the worst of it, and I don't think shooting a snake would be considered a justifiable discharge of a firearm.

You know, it's a good thing the employees at WalMart are not unionized.  If they were, the ruckus that would be raised over this guy coming in as scab labor would have overshadowed the snake bite.  Why, The Revs Al & Jessie might have shown up to show solidarity/support with the oppressed workers.

So the lesson to be learned is to go to Customer Service and ask them to send someone to get the stick out of the aisle before someone gets hurt.

Interesting.  I've had the same reaction.  Jumped three feet to the side before my brain even registered it as anything at all, let alone a rattler buzz.  Was like there's a direct connection from the earbones to the legbones which bypassed the headbones.

I think some people just don't have any useful outdoor experience.  My brother and I walked around the woods a lot as kids.  I still have a pretty good habit of watching where I put my feet.

IIRC, the only reason the officers in Noble OK were charged was that they shot at the snake without regard to any sort of backstop, not because they shot at a snake in the first place.  (IMO, the real stupidity there is that they almost certainly had a shotgun in the car, and it ain't that hard to go find one round of 12ga birdshot to deal with a snake which also happens to be an aerial target at the moment.)
