Any experience with the Kel Tec SU-16C?
« on: July 01, 2012, 12:30:18 AM »
The Kel Tec SU-16 series of rifles has caught my eye.  Does anyone have any experience or comments about them, especially the 16C model?

A buddy has one, and I had the opportunity to try it out.  His is a D model.

It's good and reliable.  Several people put a dozen or so mags through it with no issues at all.  The D model isn't all that useful, really, but the C model looks more practical.  The D model is the equivalent of the FA mini14s from The A Team.

I did see that and maybe I will start keeping an eye out at the shows.  This would be a toy only; I already have a Colt SP-1 and a Mini-14 for my .223 rifle needs.  The folding stock intrigues me for compact storage/carry.  Although they seem to be somewhat costly; I have not seen them locally for much under $ 575.

One of the few Kel Tec's I've never seen people bashing as hit or miss on reliability.  They seem to do the SU-16 and Sub2K series very well.  Based on features, if I were to get one it would be the C.

Considering how cheap some of the lower end AR's are getting, is an SU16 better than a low end AR?  I was thinking it might be a bit lighter.

  • I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

I've been wanting to buy one for yrs, ( that's how long its been since I went gun shopping??!! ow!)
Seems like a good rifle for a bug out bag, also you can own it in CA without the AR issues ( in case you want to visit the mountains or oceans)

Intriguing. I'd seen the SU-16 before, but the C model looks better to me than the A did (and the A looked okay). Might have to put this on my "serious-consideration" list.

Ahhh, sorry. They only recently changed to needing an account to even view ads, and since I'm always logged in when I go there I kinda forgot about it...

I own a CA model (same as C except stock) and probably have something like 800 rounds through it over the course of 5 years; it's 100% reliable with any brass cased ammo I've used. Steel case works okay too, but I've had a few malfunctions that seem to be the result of combining the steel cased ammo with an already dirty gun. I've gotten it really fouled up with nasty steel ammo over multiple sessions, and even then it will still function 100% with brass ammo, so overall I'm very impressed by the reliability of the gun and the quality of the internal components.

Being 4.7 lbs and able to easily fit in a backpack (even the CA model can be made operational within seconds from folded position), it has some unique benefits compared to competing rifles. In my opinion, the $600ish price tag for a new one, especially since they started chrome lining the bores a while back, is quite reasonable and well worth it. It's a seriously capable and well-engineered weapon, and it gives you the best firepower/weight ratio possible in a semi-auto 5.56.

Wow, that might make it worth it.  Thanks for the info.  I'll have to keep my eyes open.

IMO, it's the "new" Mini-14, since Ruger no longer prices the Mini-14 for the 600-ish market that I think most people were used to it being "worth".
I promise not to duck.
