Fine. I'll start my own food thread.
« on: September 23, 2012, 10:18:41 PM »
Sat Night, after Football (Robert's team won 14-12, making them 3-1), we went to a German restaurant for Oktoberfest.  I had Rumpsteak mit Kräuterbutter (and a liter of Hefeweissen), Robert had the Schnitzel mit Pommes Frites.  We had Currywurst for an appetizer, and while I loved it, he we less than impressed.

Tonight: Three venison steaks, with three different rubs, Au gratin Potatoes, and Cesar Salad (he likes my Iceberg Lettuce, Croutons, Parmesan Cheese and Caesar Salad Dressing version.)

Monday: Chicken on Lemony noodles with snow peas and sugar snap peas.

Tuesday: Chicken Kiev.

Wednesday Osso Buco.

Thursday and Friday he's at the WINO's so I get leftovers.  =D ;)

14-12 sounds like a good matchup. High-five to him.

Chow sounds good. Chicken/lemony noodles with snow and snap peas sounds right up our alley, in particular.

Sounds delicious. I love German food.

But Schnitzel mit Pommes Frites? Why not just call them "french fries"?

He got lots of high fives.  =D =D =D

Plays center and nose guard (only gets a break on kickoffs).

They held them at 1 and goal from the 1. Taking over at about the 1 inch line.  When he wasn't getting double-teamed he was in the quarterbacks face.   Best play they had was when their quarterback was running for his life (from Robert) and just heaved the ball down field.  One of the receivers just happened to see it and outran our d-backs and caught it.  35 yard gain.

Nice! Coach usually put me in R/L Tackle. Good nose guard, good tackle, and you can make the quarterback wet himself. =D

Romaine is much better in Caesar salad, with the added benefit of keeping much longer in the fridge.  Since it's just the Director and myself at home, that matters.  You can get a six-pack of Romaine at Sam's, and it'll keep pretty well for a coupla weeks, minimum.  Just sayin'.

Sounds good scout.

And why call them French fries when the alternative is so much better?

Spanish?

Spanish for fried 'taters is "papas fritas."

German would be "Gebratene Kartoffeln."

"Pommes frites" is French -- for "fried apples."

I traveled all over Germany, from Osnabrück on the North German Plain, to Berlin, to Munich and Trier.  I only heard Pommes Frites, never once did I hear "Gebratene Kartoffeln."

Hawkmoon, "pomme frites" refers to deep fried potato slices, not apples. Example: http://www.pommesfrites.ws/

If the French translation literally means fried apples, but they named fried potatoes "pomme frites", then the French are weirder than I thought.

Pomme de' terre. Apple of the earth. "Pomme frites" is contextual.

Chicken with lemony noodles was "blah"  it was like it was missing something.  The lemon was just a hint, not an actual flavor.  It needs garlic, or ginger, or soy sauce, or something.  It simply was bland.

Chicken Kiev though, is a proven winner.

Wife and I went to an Oktoberfest Friday night.  She ordered soup, coffee, and a dessert.  I ordered a combo platter, thinking she would mooch but she didn't, so I ate the schnitzels and tha cabbage and took the sausage and one of the potato dumplings home.  Started with a half-liter of Optimator (on tap) and then a .5L of Spaten Munich dunkel, in the restaurant, then switched to the Oktoberfest brew when we went outside.

The little courtyard and tent probably had 100000 people.  Or so it seemed.  A live band played polkas and the occasional waltz, mixed with country music.  In addition to beer (all imported from Munich), they served shots of Jaegermeister, Goldschläger, and a couple of other schnapps.

Every once in a while the bandleader would lead a cheer of "Zicke zacke zicke zacke hoi! hoi! hoi!" and everybody would raise their glasses but I didn't see anybody chug. :(

I studied spanish for 5 years as my first foreign language.  Got very fluent in it.

Then I studied japanese as my 2nd foreign language.  Much hilarity ensued.  Evidently my brain only processes things in "English" and "not-English."  I put together some very interesting sentences of compound languages... what was most interesting though, was the fact that my attempts at japanese still honored the correct grammatical structure the language required, just punctuated with spanish words when my vocabulary failed me.

Everyone who had been stationed in Germany for more then 6 months did that.  Speak a sentence mostly in English, with the appropriate German word or three thrown in.

Nah, this is different.  Japanese uses a very Yoda-ish grammatical structure, and I'd use that (as well as their verb conjugations) with spanish vocabulary.

Osushi o cometai desu yo.

Sort of like that.
