CSM Basil Plumley in Hospice
« on: October 09, 2012, 05:46:08 PM »
CSM Plumley, who was portrayed by Sam Elliot in the movie "We Were Soldiers", is in hospice for cancer in Columbus,GA (Near Ft. Benning, the center of the known universe).

A great man who I got a chance to meet as a young cadet many years ago, and one of a select minority to be award the CIB three times.  (WWII, Korea and Vietnam). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Infantry_Museum#File:3xCIB_Recipients_list_p3of5.jpeg

Here's the FB link:

I've sent him a card, thanking him for his service.

Get up to the roundhouse on the cliff-top standing.
Take women and children and bed them down.
Bless with a hard heart those that stand with me.
Bless the women and children who firm our hands.
Put our backs to the north wind.
Hold fast by the river.
Sweet memories to drive us on,
for the motherland.

I saw that on Facebook. If he made drops in WWII as was said in the movie, the age would be right.

You met him? That's fantastic. What choice names did he call you? ;)

God grant him a peaceful and dignified exit.

The movie was wrong, he was a "Glider Rider" (don't tell him I said that), in WWII with 320th Glider Field Artillery.  (Still got his "mustard stains" for 4 jumps).  He made his fifth combat jump with the 187th Airborne Regiment in Korea.

He told us to to shut up, listen to our NCO's, and follow their advice.

If you watch the video, COL Marm earned his MOH in the Ia Drang valley at LZ X-Ray.  I've meet him.

This in no way detracts from CSM Plumley, but in the video author Galloway says Plumley fought in "the three great wars of the 20th century." Huh?

WTF happened to WW1, sonny?

While waiting to get a prescription filled at Wal-mart today, I had to roam around and ended rifling through the discounted DVDs bin.

"We Were Soliders..." for $5.  That one is worth far more.   And it moves to first place in the queue of movies for Robert and I to watch.

America ain't what it used to be!

I had to call the local TV station & inform them he wasn't a sergeant ( even if sergeants do run the military). He was a BAMF COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm not even a veteran ???
