Weird email spam situation
« on: January 29, 2013, 10:14:13 AM »
I don't know exactly when it happened, but it was sometime last year that I stopped receiving most of the US-based spam emails I'd been getting, and instead started receiving spam emails from Brazil. I get 200 to 300 spam emails a day, and about three-quarters of them are from Brazil.

I could see if I somehow got on a spam email list in Brazil, and started receiving Brazilian spam in addition to US spam. What I don't understand is how the Brazilian spam has replaced US spam. The amount of US spam has definitely declined.

Any ideas?

Continued outsourcing of jobs, even spam...that's how bad things have gotten.

I'm getting a lot more spam at my work email address than my public email.  A LOT more, sometimes 100 message a day.  Not sure how that address got out in the wild, unless someone like CNET or travelocity sold me out to a spammer (and once 1 spammer gets your address it's all over.)

It slowed down a little after the holidays.  Most of it comes from .in and .info domains, and a few from .us  So I filter all those out.

Apparently the corp that I'm contracting for right now gives out it's email list, because from day one I get dozens of tech related spam-mails each day

Nope.

lee n field, I've had the same hosting company for my email for about 6 years. What I don't understand is why the Brazilian email spam replaced much of the US spam. I've always gotten 200-300 spam emails a day, but the number of US spams dropped when the Brazilian stuff appeared. It's almost as though some spam bots think that my mail server is in Brazil.

Doesn't mean they didn't change something.

There's could be a misconfiguration on their end.  There should be an option to block anything from *.br mail servers.  I doubt you're getting business from there.

Weird change-up on the spam, ML.  How in the heck does that happen?

I get very little spam.  Maybe I'm not shopping in the right place.

Seriously, I've never gotten much spam at any of the email addresses I have used over the years.  Two or three a day tops, excepting the stuff I actually signed up for at some point, and that can be stopped whenever I choose to unsubscribe.
I'm either living right or doing it wrong.  Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

Wifey gets tons of it, but most of it goes to a garbage yahoo account.

If there really was intelligent life on other planets, we'd be sending them foreign aid.

Conservatives see George Orwell's "1984" as a cautionary tale.  Progressives view it as a "how to" manual.

My wife often says to me, "You are evil and must be destroyed." She may be right.

Liberals believe one should never let reason, logic and facts get in the way of a good emotional argument.
