GPS/E-Collar combos
« on: April 23, 2013, 05:11:18 PM »
Anybody try one of these?  The problem I am trying to solve is where I hunt the grass is REALLY tall so we lose track of where the dog constantly.  It is tall enough we lose people sometimes...   The dog could be on a perfect point and I'd have no idea.  Then, she can't take it any longer, flushes the bird, and gets in trouble for bumping birds.

I'm looking at these two options (to my knowledge they are the only all in one units out there):
http://www.gundogsupply.com/garmin-tri-tronics-alpha-100-1-dog-system.html
http://www.gundogsupply.com/sportdog-tek-1-0lt-gps-tracking-ecollar.html

The garmin unit is a lot more expensive but also does more.  The SportDog basically just gives range and distance to the dog along with telling you if they are moving or not.

The Garmin does that and has full on GPS functionality and tracking so I know where the dog went and how far they ran (more for gee whiz purposes to me but still really cool).  It also lets me input waypoints including notes about birds found in a specific location.

Has anybody used either?  Both are well respected manufacturers with good warranties.  Since I can afford it I am leaning towards the Garmin.
