Gun magazines and gear websites
« on: May 09, 2013, 01:48:42 PM »
Yes, I could easily Google "gun magazines" - which pulls up a Midway page for ammo magazines, among others. But can y'all help me out with a list of the top 5 or 10 print gun magazines? Obviously Guns & Ammo. I know there are a bunch of them out there, I'm looking for the most well-read/popular.

Also, aside from MidwayUSA (and Cheaper Than Dirt, which we don't use anymore), what other big well-known equipment/gear suppliers are out there?

Thanks!!

The only one I regularly read is Handloader.  I'll read a Shooting Times or Handguns magazine when there's something interesting inside.

I don't know how well-read it is, but I really like the NRA's "Shooting Illustrated."
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Brownell's, the only gear supplier you'll ever need because once you close your shopping cart there is no room on your card to go anywhere else.

Www.44mag.com for magazines.  They have been sold out for a while.  A goto site before the run on mags.

I've ordered some stuff from J&G Sales.  They advertise in shotgun news a lot.  Jgsales.com

Can't think of any others that might be of interest to you.  MidwayUSA and Brownells cover most everything else.

Save your money and your eyesight. I used to subscribe to most of them. They just got suckier and suckier, and I let the subscriptions die out as they expired. The last to go was Shooting Times. They held on a bit longer than the others, but they finally succumbed to mediocrity combined with idiocy, just like all the others.

I may re-up for Shotgun News. haven't quite decided. I let it lapse about three years ago, but I find that I occasionally miss it. None of the rest are worth reading. None.

I don't think she's looking for light reading, Hawkmoon. 'Tis probably a matter of professional interest.

All the more reason to avoid the printed gun magazines. They are a treasure trove of misinformation, disinformation, and just plain drivel. They appeal primarily to people who don't know any better. (As a man I once worked for liked to say, "Everything you read in [those magazines] is true unless you have first-hand knowledge of the facts.") Gun stuff is a matter of professional interest to me, too, since I am a professional writer and I have on occasion been paid for writing articles about GUNZ!. Which is why I allowed all my subscriptions to lapse ... they were rotting my brain.

Sportsmans Guide Company sometimes has good deals on gear, but you have to be careful. Call em up and ask to be put on the mailing list for their shooters' catalog and their military surplus catalog.

Another vote for Brownells -- absolutely top shelf company. Also Natchez. CDNN is a liquidator ... they often have good deals on guns-n-gear, but it depends on what they can buy up in close-out lots.

 No, I mean she's into writing and publishing, or something of the sort. She's looking at the competition and the potential sponsors.

Or so I presume.

Gun Tests magazine.  Wifey keeps the subscription paid up, and I read every issue.

SWAT magazine for one.

Yes the magazines suck as far as information contained in them but advertising is very powerful...as evidenced by Springfield and Taurus...and knowing MrsSmith she's more interested in that aspect than turlet reading material.

SWAT does the best content on training venues from what I've seen. Get some editorial, buy an ad too.

You already know that it depends on what you are advertising.  New shooters/pistol training 101 probably wouldn't do as well in SWAT magazine as it would on a website.  Not sure how many new folks would be reading Shotgun News or Shooting Times.  Does American Rifleman have a classifieds section? (It's been years since I've looked at one)
