Badger light tactical vehicle

Saw this link and all I could think of was "Did we just basically return to the original Jeep?"

I was also curious if the Osprey is big enough to carry the up armored version since that will be requried as soon as one gets hit by a bomb.

Is "mission-specific modules" the current buzz word/catch phrase at the Pentagon?  I see that phrase quite a bit related to just about every new military item.

That ain't no Willys.

It ain't quite this...

Similar to a USGI jeep but better mobility. I like it.

Yes.  Just modernized.  We are spending a lot of time in raggedy shitholistans with tight city streets and alleys.  And transportable by the V22 internally means this could be inserted way behind enemy lines off of a light carrier, giving Marines or Specops some serious mobility.  Equip it with a pole mount fifty or Mk19 and a good standing platform in the back.
I like.

I've been thinking for a while that all these civilian UTV's (2 seats side by side and a little cargo bed) are basically filling a market niche that used to be surplus jeeps and the old simple CJ's.

Just what the military needs - a $100K ATV

Those are in use by the .mil but they have drawbacks...durability being one of them, plus reliability, mobility (a 6x6 Polaris does not turn well) etc.

WANT. I assume that's one of a kind, though. (If it's not 'shopped.)
I wish the Ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you also were meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought

Isn't that a Halo Warthog replica, the most beloved vehicle in the game?

Back in the 1980's the 9th Infantry Division (Motorized) up at Ft. Lewis was the Army's Testbed Organization.  They got all kinds of fun gizmos and toys to play with.  (I went there for ROTC Advance Camp.  Great fun.)  Anywho, that there is a Fast Attack Vehicle.  M60 Machine gun mounted on the main body for the assistant driver and a Mk19 Grenade Launcher up top for the gunner.   IIRC, some even had TOW missiles mounted on them, since 9ID was somewhat light in the Armor department (I believe they did have one, maybe two Armor battalions in 9ID, as opposed to zero in the truly "light" divisions and five or six in the Mechanized or Armor Divisions.)

Yes, they were fun as hell to drive.

That's just a simple sand rail, outfitted for military use.

A 'jeep' light vehicle will have more utility then that.  Add a trailer for hauling gear and you've got a vehicle capable of hauling 4 heavily armed Marines or troopers all over the place.  You want to piss off the enemy? Send the Marines.  You want to *expletive deleted*ck them up? Send the Marines and make them mobile!

Yeah, looks like a sand rail.

Driver's head would be in the gunner's junk were that for real.

This design clears that up a bit, though still tight quarters:

I disagree with this being a far cry from the Jeep.  It is just modernized and upgraded.  I assume it also has an automatic transmission since no one seems to know how to drive one anymore.  I like the idea.

Amazingly... not on Netflix.  Never seen.  Figured I'd watch a little bit.

Another Badger tactical vehicle...

That's not a tank.  It purports to be an armored personnel carrier, but it looks light in the armor department.  Thank goodness it is being marketed to law enforcement - as a friendlier version of the M113 with a battering ram mounted?

As for the OP's "Badger" - it needs to haul 4 combat-loaded troops (with as many as 3 more hanging off the sides & back) plus either a 1/4-ton trailer or whatever passes these days for an anti-tank gun or pack howitzer.  Forget about up-armoring them.  There are no sides that would have to sustain a pressure wave.  The roll bars need to be much higher, with provisions for mounting some sort of automatic weapon and tie-ins for a harness for the gunner - like this http://www.hnsa.org/doc/gun20mm/ .

stay safe.
If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege.

Hey you kids!! Get off my lawn!!!

They keep making this eternal vigilance thing harder and harder.  Protecting the 2nd amendment is like playing PACMAN - there's no pause button so you can go to the bathroom.

IIRC the Howe & Howe Badger, it withstood some hefty charges, and even some .50 BMG shots.  That's better than some spots on some relatively modern APC's.

But yeah, whoever titled the YouTube vid, Simply by having treads/tracks does not equal "tank".  ;/

The little thing is so tiny from the effort to make it fit through many/most residential & commercial doorways and openings, I'm not sure what it can do other than drive somewhere and make a nuisance of itself. Maybe toss a CS canister out of a port or something.  =D

Paint it orange, and have a puppet show out the side with Star Wars action figures, Jawas auctioning off C-3P0 and R2D2 to Owen Lars.  =D
I promise not to duck.

Recipe: One Hilux plus whatever appropriately sized gun you like. Sling it under the Oopsprey instead of insisting on RORO and you've got something.
