Scale it up to about softball size, camera, explosive, shrapnel. You could entertain Marines for hours with those.

Use it in place of the mystical indicator on a big oversize party Ouija board. Nobody has to know its being controlled by a smartassphone instead of mystical spirits from another dimension.

Only if it's desired to keep on searching ever downward, then never get the ball-bot back.  The physics for a self-propelled ball faced with barriers/obstacles with a height of 1/2 the ball's diameter or more are pretty unforgiving.  =D
