and other red meats, too.
I have not seen anything on this latest panic until a "survivalist" board thread showed up about a month ago. I missed the original panic but was informed via a digest from that board.
So I did a little internet checking (because if it's on the internet it has to be true, right?). Here's the breadcrumb trail:
http://tinyurl.com/ksmkmow -- The panic started here
http://io9.com/5981332/the-tick-that-can-make-you-a-vegetarian -- The "proof" I was offered that we really do need to panic
http://tinyurl.com/n8zxbeu -- Search results for red meat allergy
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_gal -- The dreaded allergy itself
For those that subscribe to the TL/DR theory of research, it generally runs like this: The most prevalent tick in the US can cause an allergic reaction/response to red meat that can be serious enough to kill you. Seeing as how it is spread only by the most prevalent tick in the US, and there are no reports of whole villages dropping dead a few hours after the regional tryouts for the Boise Bacon Blowout, I have the feeling that I might be better to be just a bit skeptical of any call for panic.
But, as they say, it is better to have several minds consider the question.
So - what say you all?
stay safe.
